When he bought the Greenbrier and vowed to restore the grand old resort to its old five-star ranking, Jim Justice persuaded an old West Virginia friend and legend, basketball star Jerry West, to get involved. West bought a house on the property and lend his famous name to the Greenbrier's steak house, Prime 44 West. He wore jersey No. 44 to the Hall of Fame. Yes, you can buy a porterhouse steak for $130. And most of the steaks run close to $50 or more. But the room is classy, the service is impeccable and where else can you get Bananas Foster put together at your table? We dined twice at Jerry West's restaurant during our recent five-day stay at the Greenbrier. The first time, I chose an eight-ounce filet mignon. The second time, I selected the salmon. My wife chose the brook trout. Delicious. Kathy Justice's prize-winning corn bread is an added treat. Jackets are required after 7 p.m., adding an extra luster to the occasion. And all the Jerry West memorabilia...medals, awards, photographs, uniforms...is a bonus. You can bet that Zeke from Cabin Creek never ate like this when he was growing up.
