“grand old girl relaxing the stuffy dress code!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

recently returned to the greenbrier for for a conference. quite a few changes since my last visit. the casino is finished. you can lose money there pretty quickly. of course my friend won 600$ on a 25 cent slot machine.... prime 44 remains the best restaurant in the place. forum is only so-so. The decorating scheme is still the loud clashing color palate of dorothy draper ( think astro turf green carpet, repeated patterns of 24" bouquets of red roses on walls and sometimes ceilings, fire engine red chairs.....not exactly a relaxing atmosphere for sleeping.
now, the dress code change: according to the information provided by our front desk person, dark jeans are acceptable with a jacket in SOME of the restaurants. this is a major change. there is hope that they may enter the 21st century after all. one caveat: be aware of changes in the pricing . They have added a "historic preservation fee" to everything at the place: services, the room, tours, food, toys.... on top of the daily resort fee. state sales tax is applied to these fees -- the $$ add up quickly. The bellmen and doormen no longer benefit from the resort fee so you must tip them ( another change that is going to cost you ) . staff are very attentive and responsive to requests. one last hint, bring your own pillow if you have neck problems, the pillows are fluffy and flatten when you lie down.

We are so happy to hear how much you enjoyed your recent visit to The Greenbrier! Thank you mentioning our revised dress code. The dress codes vary from outlet to outlet and it is best to review the dress codes on our website prior to arrival. One tradition that still carries on for over 100 years now is dressing in one’s finest for dining in the Main Dining Room. Jacket and Tie are required for gentlemen at dinner in the Main Dining Room and collared shirts and slacks or dress shorts are required for breakfast and tea. Blue jeans, t-shirts workout attire, etc are never in keeping with the 101 years of continuous elegant service in the Main Dining Room. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

The entrance drive was breathtaking... we were greeted by a doorman whose voice made you feel like his best friend. The room was perfect, quiet , well-cared for , and located near the Congressional Suite. Drapers was great for breakfast , Pool Restaurant for lunches and West 44 for dinner. Wine list at 44 could have had more of a selection in the $90. to $180. price range, especially when the group requirs 4 bottles.
"Old White" is one of the most beautiful PGA courses on tour; a McDonald-Raynor masterpiece design for the golf
buffs. Don't miss playing Oakhurst for the opportunity to play with hickory shafted clubs.
A great three days... we will return !

Thank you for letting us know about your golf getaway! The Greenbrier is proud to offer five championship golf courses including the Old White TPC (host to The Greenbrier Classic, a PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Event) and Oakhurst Links. Built in 1884, Oakhurst Links is a unique 30-acre course, museum and clubhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Russell Montague, the original owner, learned about golf in Scotland and built the course with some local friends before any other course existed in America. Guests of The Greenbrier then thought golf was an oddity - so rare was the game at that time. The first competition at Oakhurst was held in 1888. Today, conventional golf clubs are not used at Oakhurst. Instead, players use hickory-shafted clubs and hit gutta-percha balls off tees fashioned from sand and water the same way it was done more than 130 years ago.

This is our second trip to the Greenbrier since it's renovation. This is a graceful and relaxing resort with plenty to offer any age group. Lots of activities for children and relaxing atmosphere for the older traveler. While many children were staying here, it was always quiet and relaxing for those who just want to read or walk the beautiful grounds. This is a resort from a more gentiile era with high tea every afternoon. The staff was always pleasant in a non-hurried southern kind of way. The meetings were well serviced with great food and efficient service. Unless you are driven to something high energy like Las Vegas, this is the premier resort of America. Thanks to Jim Justice for restoring this national treasure.

We are so pleased to be able to welcome you back to The Greenbrier! There have been many additions in recent years including the Casino Club (an elegant 103,000 square-foot venue), Prime 44 West (a fine dining steakhouse) and The Greenbrier Classic (a PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Event) and much much more! We hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back yet again!

Talk about a charming resort. The grounds are really lush. I had friends who golfed, and they said it was a really wonderful experience. There is an indoor pool, a bowling lane, and an infinity pool. The lobby bar is a great place to meet for drinks with a surprisingly good by the glass wine list. I was able to cross this off my "bucket list."

Room Tip: ask for a deluxe room as an upgrade

It had been years since I stayed at the Greenbrier and it has improved. It is a true resort with activities of every nature. it is impossibleto get bored. The service is outstanding and the facilities, although old, are in perfect condition. The only short coming was the food. We learned from friends that go frequently, that they never eat at the Greenbrier; they go to Lewisburg about ten miles away.

The Greenbrier has been lovingly updated since our last visit 10 years ago. Still all the Dorothy Draper touches, but with a new glow. The casino does not interfere with the traditional Southern vibe, and is actually fun to try out (they provide $10 of "free money" if you are interested). Bunker tours are still fascinating, the infinity pool is lovely, and there are now some additional restaurants - an Asian fusion in the casino, a Steakhouse and Italian restaurant (the Forum) open to all. Prices are higher for activities (e.g., croquet) than similar amenities in other resorts, though bowling is a terrific deal for a family activity. Our extended clan stayed in a cottage (4 bedrooms) 10 years ago and this time, which is a great way to unite folks for a family reunion/celebration.

The size, history and location of this property makes it a more difficult than a traditional property to review. For most Canadians traveling south to the US, it's location in the hills of West Virginia is off the beaten path. All I can say is that's too bad as it's a GREAT destination of historical value and with the wide variety of activity options on the property, aside from the golf, there's something here for everyone. The views from the mountain lookout lodge at the top is spectacular. The property is very well maintained, the attn. to details in the decor in the main building is impressive. Would I rate the sleeping rooms or overall service in the dining areas on par with five star properties in Southern California or Palm Beach Florida, probably not. I stayed in the cottages, so can't comment on the main building. As for dining options, being in a secluded location, means there are not many off property options nearby, so expect to pay top dollar on food and beverage options. The only negative of my stay was the in-room movies was not working properly and when I called, they said someone would be right over. No one came and no phone call, so that was disappointed to be treated that way. That issue aside, I would make the trek again from the Great White North.

Room Tip: Maybe compare the cottage options to hte main hotel before booking

We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay! The Greenbrier is a luxury resort, and we pride ourselves on offering an unparalleled range of amenities and activities as well as exceptional customer service throughout our 10,000-acre property. Since 1778, America's Resort has been proud to welcome distinguished guests including 26 U.S. Presidents. We are proud of the 236 years of recorded history surrounding the Greenbrier Resort. There are very few institutions in America that have, like us, been basically in the same business for two hundred years; other examples might be Harvard, Yale, Congress, and the U.S. Army. I do wish to apologize for the unusual lapse in service and response to the issues you experienced with your television reception. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Greenbrier!
