“Walking the Grounds - Worth the stop!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

This review is purely for the grounds/bar/day trip and not for a stay as a guest. We visited the resort just to see the grounds, historical decor in the lobby spaces, and have martinis. We thought the decor was really fun. This place makes you feel like you're in an episode of Mad Men, and I could see how that can go both ways -- there's an "old money," glamour element, and a dated, stuffy element. I thought it was fun to visit the shops and see how every nook and cranny of this place has been decorated. The grounds were beautiful. We had Boyd & Blair vodka martinis that were expensive but delicious. I would say this resort is worth stopping at if in the area, but again, we did not see let alone sleep in guest rooms, we did not have to pay fees. It might not be at it's former glory but it's worth seeing in your lifetime.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your recent visit. The Greenbrier has enjoyed a 65-year relationship with Dorothy Draper & Company, and her legendary style of vibrant colors, floral patterns and bold contrasts is on display around every corner!

My husband and I looked forward to visiting the Greenbrier for months prior to our trip. We were so disappointed. I understand Mr Justice is trying to keep the ambiance and tradition long ago established by the former owners. However, the rooms just seem old and worn out. The curtains were dusty and the carpet was dirty. All through the resort, you could see signs of neglect. We felt taken advantage of when we were charged 6.5% Historical Preservation Fee on everything including the room, all restaurants and even the shops! On top of the fee, we were charged a $35 resort fee. This fee included coffee and not much else. However, you have to go get the coffee from a server on the first floor. Give me a modern day Marriott or Hilton any day with the coffee in the room. The restaurants were exorbitantly expensive and the food was mediocre. I can understand why so few big name golfers are staying away this year. Our parents stayed at the Greenbrier in its heyday and loved it. I guess those days are over. So sad.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at The Greenbrier; and please accept my sincere apologies for the shortcomings and disappointments you shared. From your comments, it is evident that we failed to provide you with the impeccable service and memorable experiences our guests have come to expect. Your feeling that the value of your dining and culinary experience was not commensurate with the price paid will receive our careful attention; and we will certainly continue to work to improve that perception for all our guests. We are continually working to improve and renovate our facilities. It is disappointing to read that unfortunately these ongoing efforts were not apparent for your visit. There certainly is no excuse that can be offered for dusty curtains and the carpet those are inexcusable lapses in our housekeeping services. If you wish to contact me to discuss your stay I may be reached at 304-536-7830 or robert_mickey@greenbrier.com.

Pros: Plenty of activities for guests of all ages and interests. Professional and friendly service. Rich history.

Cons: While they boast a spa and medical clinic, this is the only resort that we have visited in over a decade that has NO spa cuisine at ANY of their many restaurants. It's actually difficult to find a healthy meal on property.

They nickel and dime and gouge more than their peers.

Cottages are remote and generally disconnected from the amenities.

Thank you for recognizing our incredible staff and the service they provide. My husband had a conference and I tagged along with 2 of our children. The décor is loud, but fitting for the overall feel of The Greenbrier. We were in a 1BR garden suite which was plenty big for us and our 2 young daughters. Everything is expensive, but we were expecting it. The bunker tour was very interesting and we loved the pools (gorgeous outdoor infinity pool, and classic indoor pool). The food at Draper's was good (not great); the girls LOVED the ice cream! Grounds are all very well maintained. Our only complaints - my daughter left a pair of earrings on the end table; we called housekeeping but never heard back. Also, the last night we were there, housekeeping stopped by to ask us if we would like turn-down service; we said yes, but they never showed up. Housekeeping was great the first 2 days; not as good the last 2.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your recent trip to The Greenbrier and that you enjoyed your tour of The Bunker! The entire West Virginia Wing was originally added to the property in the late 1950s to conceal the simultaneous construction beneath it of The Bunker, a top secret U.S. government fallout shelter that is now open for tours for a small fee. I wish to apologize for the unfortunate lapses in services that you mentioned with our housekeeping team. If you would contact me at I 304-536-7830 or robert_mickey@greenbrier.com I would be happy to help locate your daughter’s missing ear rings. We hope to welcome you back to The Greenbrier soon!

Sincerely,
Robert Mickey

Staying at the Greenbrier is like stepping back in time except you have all these wonderful amenities and service. The grounds are spectacular, the cottages have ample room with a pull out sofa bed and fireplace. The golf course is well groomed, and the gun club did a nice job working with beginners on clay sporting. The fly fishing is amazing and over 10 trout and bass were caught! The infinity edge pool was delightful. The bunker tour was very interesting although maybe too long for children under the age of 10. The food was delicious and the service was stellar. So many activities to do and not enough time. We will be back.

The Greenbriar goes out of their way to make you feel special. From the greeting by the bell captain and valet to the docent providing the tour of the 'bunker', all the staff members are focused on making your visit memorable. Great food, wonderful accommodations, great golf, and great history set this place apart. As a native West Virginian that hasn't lived in the state since high school, the Greenbriar makes me proud to be from West Virginia. Kudos to Jim Justice for reviving this special place in America!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the oldest part of the hotel. The old southern charm really sinks in!
