“Very nice. A little pricey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

Our stay of three days was an enjoyable experience. The food was very good as was the décor. The service was absolutely spectacular! The only negative remark is the true cost of everything. Prices were high even on resort standards. But still I would recommend the Greenbrier to anyone looking for a special getaway.

Room Tip: Find a special on line.

Unfortunately, we visited The Greenbier over Easter Weekend which happened to be when a noro virus was running rampant in the hotel. All of my family (as well as many other families that we met) were struck with the bug. Not the hotel's fault, but the way that the outbreak was handled was really disappointing. For example, when we called about seeing a local doctor, the concierge told me that they could not help us. When I called to cancel my spa appointment because I was throwing up all night, I was told that there was a 24 hour cancellation policy and I would be charged if I didn't show up for the appointment.

This is still a very nice resort, but for the prices being paid, one would expect the service and understanding (especially in our situation) to be more top notch. I doubt that we will return anytime soon.

Room Tip: The Spring Row Cottages and Paradise Row Cottages are really nice!

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review regarding your recent stay at The Greenbrier; and please accept my sincere apologies for the shortcomings and disappointments you shared. The indication that you might not return anytime soon is concerning to us.

Your atypical experiences regarding the Spa and our lack of concern and care were very disappointing to read, and I am following up with that team to ensure that issues of this nature do not recur in the future. I also apologize that we were not more helpful and caring concerning your family’s illness. Although we do not have direct access to a doctor or nurse we certainly could have helped with clinics and offices in the area that would have been able to see your family; as well as providing transportation for you.

I am very sorry that we failed to live up to our traditional standards of excellence during your recent visit with us. If you should decide to honor us with a return visit, I hope you will contact me directly for assistance with all the arrangements. I believe you have already received an email from me with my contact information, but to be sure I may be reached at 304-536-7830 or robert_mickey@greenbrier.com

Sincerely,
Robert A. Mickey

We just returned from a three-day visit to The Greenbrier and once again found everything to be wonderful. Everyone who works there was so friendly and helpful, the grounds are perfectly maintained, and the hotel is absolutely immaculate!

Room Tip: We chose a junior suite this time and found it to be extremely comfortable.

This resort is incredible! We have stayed in historic resorts in Europe and the US and this is the best of all. The grounds, the rooms, the entertainment, and the staff are incredible. This resort has it all and we can't wait to return!

Want to start by saying I have been here several times (4-5) and really do love the resort. That said, this last experience was pretty bad. I probably will never actually return. I was there for 2 days and spent $1,200 on god knows what. NOT worth the money to stay at this property.

First, there is a new resort tax fee that had many of the guests upset while we were there. On top of the regular 20% service fee for everything, regular resort tax and regular sales tax, there is also a new 6.5% presidential historical tax (or something like that). When buying ANYTHING (food, newspapers, gum, your hotel room, bowling) you are charged this 6.5%.

Second, the dining experiences are not great. Our waitresses and waiters at all dining outlets were not attentive and did not know the menu. The food at Drapers and Sammys was pretty bad and came out wrong. The Cafe's food was better, but our order was wrong again. The comments that the waiters and waitresses gave us as we were sitting (Forum), as we were ordering and when we were about to pay were ridiculous and not something from a 5 start property. Overall, was this worth a $40/per person lunch and a $90/per person dinner each time? Absolutely Not.

Third, the service at the resort has gotten too relaxed. We were in a cottage and no one ever came to take away our room service food/tray for a full day. We also never had anyone come and really clean our room. They might have swept the floor once and made our beds but the table, kitchen area, bathroom living room was not even organized or picked-up.

Finally, our bedroom in the cottage had pipe issues all night. There was constant banging every night around 2am and it happened like once an hour. We thought someone was knocking on the door each time. Ugg, not a peaceful sleep. Also, we understand that the place is old and has character, but do a little work before a guest comes. We filled the bathtub up for our baby and the water was totally brown. It hadn't been run in awhile, but still at least run the water before a guest comes into the room.

Dear Guest, fist allow me to say that we are honored to read that you really do love The Greenbrier. However, that makes it all the more disappointing to read about the inexcusable lapses in service that you experienced during your recent stay. We believe that our first priority at The Greenbrier – no matter one’s official duties – is to sincerely care about our guests and their enjoyment of the resort. This is the essence of ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen. I apologize that we failed you in this regard for this visit. I would be happy to discuss in detail your stay, concerns and disappointments. I may be reached at 304-536-7830 or robert_mickey@greenbrier.com. The Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) of 6.5% is collected to preserve and protect landscapes, buildings, and amenities that have played a meaningful role in The Greenbrier’s past while carefully planning the continuous improvement for the future. The proceeds from this fund will also have an important economic, environmental, and educational impact on the resort and surrounding communities. We want future generations to be able to experience and discover their own connections to The Greenbrier. We remain at your service and hope to have the honor of serving you again.

We spent a long weekend at The Greenbrier this past weekend for our Mom's 90th Birthday. What a great place to celebrate such a significant event. The rooms and food were superb. The breakfast buffet in the main dining room is not to be missed. I don't know what they do to their country scrambled eggs, but they are the best. The fresh fruit is outstanding. We did the Resort Historian's Outside Tour. Excellent. The Bunker Tour was great. My brother-in-law really enjoyed the trout fishing. My wife really liked all of the shopping. Just walking around the hotel itself and the extensive grounds, both inside and out, is very relaxing.

Room Tip: We had a standard room that was large, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable.

The Greenbrier Hotel is an old and stately hotel with a wonderful history. During the Cold War, the Bunkers were built to house the members of Congress in case of an emergency. Now that the secret is out, tours are conducted to help learn about our country's past.

Nestled in the mountains, the Greenbrier is a magnificent property. The grounds are beautifully manicured and the flowers are gorgeous in any season.

The golf courses are beautiful and difficult to navigate. It looks so easy on television during the Greenbrier Classic in July. But, those players are the pros.

There is plenty to do at the Greenbrier even in an off season. The indoor pool is lovely. The spa will occupy your time and leave you relaxed. You can shop, bowl, get hair and make up done, eat delicious homemade candy, and watch two cooking demonstrations at 11 and 2 in the kitchen shop.

The rooms were decorated by Dorothy Draper and updated by Carlton Varney. Some rooms are a bit overdone for some. Floral wallpaper can be overpowering especially in a bedroom.

At check in, you will be welcomed to the West Virginia resort with iced tea or champagne. The bellman are professionals and are very helpful.

Check out the afternoon tea in the main dining room. Though it used to be in the parlor, a much more open venue, I suppose it is now in the new area because of the amount of seating that is available. The cookies are fewer than in year's past, but the ladies who serve the tea are special.

Dinner at Prime 44 was superb. I suggest sharing a steak and sides, but leave room for Karen West's cake. Delicious. Take time to look at the memorabilia from West Virginia's Jerry West's stellar basketball career located in the restaurant.

Shopping was a concern for us during our last trip. The hotel charged a 6% state sales tax, a 1 1/2% county tax, and a resort tax of 6 1/2% totaling a 14% tax on everything at the hotel from golf and food, spa and retail, to dinner and drinks. This adds quite a bit to the price of a visit.

After visiting the Greenbrier over the years, I have noticed several changes, some of which show the need to acquire more money at the cost of short changing the guests. Gone are the monogrammed napkins and silverware, the basket of amenities in the room, the gift left in the room at turndown service. Some of the restaurants are not open every day. In fact, the Forum was never open during our stay. In order to bring in more revenue, special room rates are extended to some. The clientele has changed. Instead of seeing people dressed to the nines, I saw tee shirts, hats, and jeans in the lobby and the main rooms of the hotel.

I am not sure that the added expense of the resort fees coupled with dated bedrooms and bathrooms is worth the effort.

Room Tip: Find a newly renovated room with double sinks. Also see if you can book a room away from the noisy...
