“Wow! What a great place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

We spent a long weekend at The Greenbrier this past weekend for our Mom's 90th Birthday. What a great place to celebrate such a significant event. The rooms and food were superb. The breakfast buffet in the main dining room is not to be missed. I don't know what they do to their country scrambled eggs, but they are the best. The fresh fruit is outstanding. We did the Resort Historian's Outside Tour. Excellent. The Bunker Tour was great. My brother-in-law really enjoyed the trout fishing. My wife really liked all of the shopping. Just walking around the hotel itself and the extensive grounds, both inside and out, is very relaxing.

Room Tip: We had a standard room that was large, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable.

The Greenbrier Hotel is an old and stately hotel with a wonderful history. During the Cold War, the Bunkers were built to house the members of Congress in case of an emergency. Now that the secret is out, tours are conducted to help learn about our country's past.

Nestled in the mountains, the Greenbrier is a magnificent property. The grounds are beautifully manicured and the flowers are gorgeous in any season.

The golf courses are beautiful and difficult to navigate. It looks so easy on television during the Greenbrier Classic in July. But, those players are the pros.

There is plenty to do at the Greenbrier even in an off season. The indoor pool is lovely. The spa will occupy your time and leave you relaxed. You can shop, bowl, get hair and make up done, eat delicious homemade candy, and watch two cooking demonstrations at 11 and 2 in the kitchen shop.

The rooms were decorated by Dorothy Draper and updated by Carlton Varney. Some rooms are a bit overdone for some. Floral wallpaper can be overpowering especially in a bedroom.

At check in, you will be welcomed to the West Virginia resort with iced tea or champagne. The bellman are professionals and are very helpful.

Check out the afternoon tea in the main dining room. Though it used to be in the parlor, a much more open venue, I suppose it is now in the new area because of the amount of seating that is available. The cookies are fewer than in year's past, but the ladies who serve the tea are special.

Dinner at Prime 44 was superb. I suggest sharing a steak and sides, but leave room for Karen West's cake. Delicious. Take time to look at the memorabilia from West Virginia's Jerry West's stellar basketball career located in the restaurant.

Shopping was a concern for us during our last trip. The hotel charged a 6% state sales tax, a 1 1/2% county tax, and a resort tax of 6 1/2% totaling a 14% tax on everything at the hotel from golf and food, spa and retail, to dinner and drinks. This adds quite a bit to the price of a visit.

After visiting the Greenbrier over the years, I have noticed several changes, some of which show the need to acquire more money at the cost of short changing the guests. Gone are the monogrammed napkins and silverware, the basket of amenities in the room, the gift left in the room at turndown service. Some of the restaurants are not open every day. In fact, the Forum was never open during our stay. In order to bring in more revenue, special room rates are extended to some. The clientele has changed. Instead of seeing people dressed to the nines, I saw tee shirts, hats, and jeans in the lobby and the main rooms of the hotel.

I am not sure that the added expense of the resort fees coupled with dated bedrooms and bathrooms is worth the effort.

Room Tip: Find a newly renovated room with double sinks. Also see if you can book a room away from the noisy...

Beautiful grounds, top-notch service, elegant decor and superb accommodations. There is something for everyone at this resort. The casino is wonderful but don't forget to bring a suit jacket for after 7 pm. The artisans in the Art Colony are incredibly friendly and talented. I highly recommend stopping by Gibson's and talking to the painter/jewelry maker. She's a gem!

This is the resort by which all others should be measured. I am afraid that it has slipped somewhat compared to some others on the east coast. It is a very large, beautiful resort which is immaculately clean. The staff is friendly and for the most part courteous and competent. The rooms were very clean comfortable and updated. The food was exceptional and priced accordingly. The fitness center was disappointing but one gets a good workout just going to it since it is a brisk walk down the hill. The indoor pool is an interesting old pool but not very functional by modern standards for recreation at a public hotel. Most of the numerous activities are priced too high considering the already high price for the stay. The bunker tour is a must but again, overpriced. In summary, this is a very nice place to stay but somewhat expensive overall.

Room Tip: Get updated room.

The entire West Virginia Wing was originally added to the property in the 1950s to conceal the simultaneous construction beneath it of The Bunker, a top secret U.S. government fallout shelter that is now open for tours. We look forward to your next visit!

We had sky-high expectations going into our stay at the Greenbrier, with its storied history, and it surpassed every single one. I'd heard a lot of "dissing" of Dorothy Draper and her colorfully dramatic décor. Well, the dissers should get with it. Know that you are going to a splashy southern resort where flowers, florals, and vibrant colors rhapturously reign supreme. If you are looking for minimalism, make reservations elsewhere. We loved the dramatic entryway, the bar with the 600 pound chandelier from "Gone With the Wind," and most especially, the Trellis Room, where we took advantage of the delicious complimentary coffee in the morning. My husband golfed, and I came upon a streamside "Meditation Walk" which was one of the high points for me. The meals in the Main Dining Room (you're lucky if Harlan is your water) and Prime 44 West (namesake Jerry West) were expensive, but well worth it for the care, deliciousness, and presentation. We liked staying in the central part of the hotel and were on the second floor. It was so convenient. You could get lost in the place. We also recommend the Bunker Tour. I'm no longer green with envy; I've stayed there, and my husband and I look upon it as a luxury experience which was truly worth it.

Room Tip: Lower floor; central location

Our family stayed at the Greenbrier this weekend and had a wonderful experience! There are many activities that the Greenbrier offers- you don't even have to leave the resort! We enjoyed the following:
Horseback riding- Karl was a fantastic guide!
Indoor Pool
Bowling- so fun!
Theater- Frozen!
Cooking demonstrations- wow... I loved this and spent way too much money in the Greenbrier Gourmet on the gadgets that the demonstrator used!
Glass blowing demonstration- my son won a locally crafted piece of glass!
Hiking

We have two children, ages 8 and 11- what a wonderful resort to spend some family time at! The food was great and the staff is very kind and helpful.
Close buy, there is a small quaint town called Lewisburg. I encourage you to visit the antique shops and the restaurant Food and Friends! What a great home cooked food!

Overall, this trip was exciting and we were pleased with the family friendly activities that the Greenbrier offers!

We just visited the Greenbrier-about a week ago. The experience was fabulous from start to end. The service was just top! From the moment the doors open you are welcomed like royalty. The champagne, the friendly staff, the gorgeous surroundings all come together to suspend you in time...The room was very spacious but I did not care for its decor-the furniture could be a bit more plush. However, the food was excellent in every restaurant and as I mentioned, the service was simply exceptional everywhere. We enjoyed the many activities available; really, this place offers so many things to do that one weekend was not nearly long enough. I am a tennis player and enjoyed the tennis center and received a very fun and professional hour of tennis lesson. We also did the Bunker tour. A must do! In addition, the hotel has plenty of indoor exercise facilities and other things like a fantastic pool, a nice bowling alley, and free movies! There is also great shopping and if the weather had been better, we would have gone horse riding or to the mud adventures in the jeeps. We will be back for more!
My only disappointment was with the spa hours. The main reason we decided to go to the Greenbrier on a whim was to rejuvenate in the old sulphur baths. What a disappointment when we found out that the last bath could only be taken by 4:30 pm as the spa closed at 5! The staff was friendly and nice, but the hours are just.....They explained to me that they will have extended hours in the new schedule but I believe that will be only until 6 pm. Really not long enough if the purpose of ones' trip is the spa, the famous spa! I say to management, take advantage of the history, quality of the spa and baths and offer longer hours to your visitors. Even if services are not available, at least the sauna and steam rooms should be open to those of us who drive far just to soothe our aching muscles.
