“If not perfection, then as good as it gets”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Our week at the Greenbrier was simply a fabulous experience. While the resort is dated, it is not run down, just dated in a quaint, classic way. The grounds are immaculate with every detail covered. We are from the deep south, so when we arrived in our room and saw their signature slogan "It's sleepy time down south", we chuckled to ourselves. However, we are pleased to announce that while the Greenbrier is up north to us, they have southern hospitality down pat. ALL of the employees greeted us with smiles and seemed genuinely happy to be working at the Greenbrier. The property has everything you need - shopping, world class restaurants (world class wines as well), golf, activities - swimming, bowling, video games for the kids, etc. The SPA treatments are as good as anywhere we have been. Oh, did I mention the sleigh ride? Wow. We thought when we booked a week in the winter that we might be bored after a couple of days, well we weren't. In fact, one day we realized we haven't even left the building, much less the property. Golf, walking, hiking trails abound. We are planning another trip. Save your money, it is worth the price!!!

The Greenbrier is a place to go if you wish to be transported back to a time when service and dress were normal. I am not going to get into all of the resort ammenities, which are numerous. The charm of this place is in the detail. I do not beileve there was an employee the entire trip that did not give us a heart felt greeting or warm wishes. Everyone of them truely wanted to go out of their way to make our trip more enjoyable. The entire compound holds true to its original turn of the century architecture extravagance. We stayed in a standard room which had all of the regular hotel ammenities. Yes, it was not large, and had dated features but they were all charming, clean, worked perfectly and looked brand new. The public rooms were dramatic. There were tall detailed ceilings, large windows, enormous chandeliers everywhere, winding stairways and passageways in every direction. You could have spent hours exploring just the inside. Although it was March and patches of snow were on the ground, we did manage a stroll outside and could imagine the beauty that spring would bring with all of the landscape in full bloom. In the evening, we enjoyed both the main dining room and the Forum. The service and food were impecible. The casino was like being on the vegas strip with the usual gaming. The only difference being that the drinks were not free. Which brings me to the last item and that is the fees. I have been to other resorts that charge similar fees. This was the only time I felt that all of them were completely justified. It is a 5 star resort with 5 star service and earned every penny that I paid them. My only suggestion to the Greenbrier would be to come up with an All-Inclusive price so there will be no sticker shock at checkout. The only other resort I know of in America of this caliber that has an All-Inclusive price is the Amelia Island Plantation in Florida.

We stayed at the greenbrier for my husband's birthday one weekend in march 2013. From the moment we pulled up we experienced nothing but the best service one could expect. Everyone was jumping at the chance to help us check in, get our luggage to our room, show us around etc.

The decor is interesting but we were expecting that from pictures on trip advisor and reading about the history of the resort. There are bold colors everywhere with loud carpet and wallpaper but it seems to work for this historic hotel. However the bathroom
In our room seemed more like a bathroom at someone's grandmother's house than a 4-5 star resort. I would never claim to be an interior decorator but the wallpaper in the bathroom was not as well done as the rest of the resort and didnt seem to go with the wallpaper in the room. Also there was no counter space (the bathroom had a pedestal sink). The shower had good water pressure and the heating/air conditioning unit in the room worked well and easily adjusted the temperature in the room.
We did the bunker tour which was very cool and informative. Our tour guide was entertaining. We had a super banana split at drapers and a delicious dinner at prime 44. The shops at the greenbrier had great hours (open til 9 or 10 on Saturday). We will definitely be coming back to the greenbrier!

We dined at Prime 44 while staying at the Greenbrier. We loved the atmosphere of the restaurant and all the staff were extremely professional and provided excellent service while we were there. We knew the food was going to be expensive going in but the steaks were a little pricey at $65 for a ribeye. However they were excellent and both cooked to the temperature of our liking. The onion rings left a little to be desired as they were doughy and did not have much flavor. That was one of our only disappointments since they are $12. The Caesar salad was made table side by a very funny server and it tasted amazing! My husband says it is the best Caesar salad he has ever had. The making of the salad table side really added to the experience too. The bread was great and the cornbread was especially wonderful. We will definitely eat there again when we come back to the greenbrier!

We spent a long weekend here in October 2012 for a military school reunion. Very enjoyable; wife loved the horseback trail rides. The banquet facilities were also top notch. This old hotel has been reborn, and hearkens back to its glory days!

Room Tip: We shared a cottage with another couple - was great!

This was my second visit to the Greenbrier. Though I haven't tried all the restaurants onsite, I've had several meals at Draper's Cafe. I especially like the chicken salad that comes with fresh fruit and a popover. Yummy! Gratuity is always automatically included in the bill, so don't double tip!

We stayed 4 nights (a long weekend) at the Greenbrier in July 2012. I traveled with my husband and 3 year old son. We stayed in a Spring Row Cottage which is a spacious one bedroom suite. The furninshings were dated but it's the Greenbrier, so a lot of things are dated. They do have cribs available for use which was a plus. (Many places we travel to only have pack n plays and we end up having to rent a crib.) The Spring Row Cottages are just a few minutes walk to the main building and close to the outdoor pool. One complaint was that our cottage had an ant problem and it was very difficult to get housekeeping to do anything about it.

Overall, I liked our stay but wouldn't rate it a 5-star luxury resort. The history behind the Greenbrier is really neat and the scenery is beautiful but that is about where it ends. I think it is worth a stay but maybe not during peak season when we stayed. We paid 600+ a night and if you are a person that needs to get your money's worth, you probably won't. There is nothing for a 3 year old to do but the pool and it is only open from 10am to 6pm in the summer which I thought was strange. I can also see older kids getting bored there. I would think it would be better as an adult trip and getting to experience the casino which we didn't get to.

The restaurants are good and room service is available to the cottages. Just be prepared to pay top dollar for everything and don't expect top dollar service. We ordered room service every day and they often forgot items in our order. Our favorite restaurant was at the golf club and had great views and a nice atmosphere.

I would consider a trip back because it is a unique place and the grounds are beautiful, but I'm not in a hurry.

Room Tip: I liked Spring Row Cottages location. Very cose to the outdoor pool, tennis courts, and golf club.
