“Pricey, but worth it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We spent a long weekend here in October 2012 for a military school reunion. Very enjoyable; wife loved the horseback trail rides. The banquet facilities were also top notch. This old hotel has been reborn, and hearkens back to its glory days!

Room Tip: We shared a cottage with another couple - was great!

This was my second visit to the Greenbrier. Though I haven't tried all the restaurants onsite, I've had several meals at Draper's Cafe. I especially like the chicken salad that comes with fresh fruit and a popover. Yummy! Gratuity is always automatically included in the bill, so don't double tip!

We stayed 4 nights (a long weekend) at the Greenbrier in July 2012. I traveled with my husband and 3 year old son. We stayed in a Spring Row Cottage which is a spacious one bedroom suite. The furninshings were dated but it's the Greenbrier, so a lot of things are dated. They do have cribs available for use which was a plus. (Many places we travel to only have pack n plays and we end up having to rent a crib.) The Spring Row Cottages are just a few minutes walk to the main building and close to the outdoor pool. One complaint was that our cottage had an ant problem and it was very difficult to get housekeeping to do anything about it.

Overall, I liked our stay but wouldn't rate it a 5-star luxury resort. The history behind the Greenbrier is really neat and the scenery is beautiful but that is about where it ends. I think it is worth a stay but maybe not during peak season when we stayed. We paid 600+ a night and if you are a person that needs to get your money's worth, you probably won't. There is nothing for a 3 year old to do but the pool and it is only open from 10am to 6pm in the summer which I thought was strange. I can also see older kids getting bored there. I would think it would be better as an adult trip and getting to experience the casino which we didn't get to.

The restaurants are good and room service is available to the cottages. Just be prepared to pay top dollar for everything and don't expect top dollar service. We ordered room service every day and they often forgot items in our order. Our favorite restaurant was at the golf club and had great views and a nice atmosphere.

I would consider a trip back because it is a unique place and the grounds are beautiful, but I'm not in a hurry.

Room Tip: I liked Spring Row Cottages location. Very cose to the outdoor pool, tennis courts, and golf club.

If you have never been there, it's worth the trip just to see the facility and grounds. The decorating in places is bizarre but each room is unique and well worth seeing. The casino is a plus along with the indoor pool, and bowling. We visited the weekend after Valentine's day and planned to dine off the grounds but changed out plans when we found out that the regular band in the big dining room is back. In the past there was no music or music that wasn't appropriate for an elegant dinner. The meal was very nice (I had the potato crusted halibut) but the dancing made it special.
As with any hotel of this size there are going to be glitches, and we certainly experienced a few, but if you have a problem be sure to mention it and I'm sure it will be corrected to your satisfaction. We're looking forward to our next visit!

Draper's is a good place for a basic meal at the Greenbrier. We eat there every time we visit. I liked it better before they moved it with the remodel, but it is still reliable and good.

We love eating here! It is alway so quaint and charming. Usually, we arrive at the Greenbrier around noon, so our tradition is to head to Draper's for lunch. The salads are wonderful and the sandwiches are delightful. The service is excellent, very attentive, we love the water guy. The peach iced tea is a must!! Once we have tasted the peach tea, we know we have arrived at the Greenbrier!

We had a Valentine's day dinner here at the Greenbrier. Our experience began with a maitre d (or assistant greeter at check in) who was quite insensitive to a situation that my wife had a pair of dark denim jeans on. His reaction and remedy would have stopped most anyone from ever eating there again. There was another host there and she offered the bar for the denim jeans but the option was already tarnished by an overbearing apparel policeman. We decided to change the attire for her and come back as we are very easy going and the life is to short attitude. The steaks were ok. Lobster mash was ok but with instant potato purée. Luckily our waiter was very nice. As we left, we again witnessed our fav host holding more clothing appropriate court with more guests willing to drop hundreds of dollars only to be turned away. I have no issues with the dress code as The Greenbrier has this code but sometimes it is all in the presentation and in the end it was still a turd on a silver platter.
