Under new ownership, the resort is still fabulous! Frankly, under the old ownership and during the “for sale” process, it barely skipped a beat on service…unusual for a property changing hands. What has improved considerably is the food. Hats off to the chef. Suggest eating at Prime 44. Service and menu spectacular. Ate at Sam Sneads for thanksgiving, and although I’m not a fan of “family style” food service, the chef got it right. Flavors were spot on.
For those that question the wisdom of a casino at a family resort, it doesn’t take away anything from the family environment. In fact, there is restaurant in the casino (Fusion) that serves great food for the adults. And the main dining room is always a treat. (Note: This writer showed up with a jacket but no tie. I had to go back to the room to put it on. I’m pleased the resort stuck to standards, with no exceptions.) So bring a jacket and tie if you plan on eating in the main dining room, and jackets required for the casino.

There is so much to do at The Greenbrier, not to mention great shopping, tennis, cooking classes, golf (in season), spa. etc. It would be nice if the spa added a "quiet" room to relax in after a procedure as most high end spas do. This is glaringly lacking.
I like tennis and the facility and instructors are the best. Especially Jenny, one of the tennis instructors. And as is tradition in our family for the last four years, we retire each night to the bowling alleys and the kids love it! And now we include ice skating!
We had two junior suites. The bedding, climate controls, and room is comfortable and roomy. This is a grand old hotel, and Mr. Justice is doing a fine job on preserving the tradition, outstanding service and wonderful staff. Cannot say enough.
(We booked our family for Christmas next year…can’t wait!)

Room Tip: Junior suites are great, but some have very small bathrooms. This can be tight with more than two a...

This was our first stay at the Greenbrier, we recently took a day trip and did the Bunker Tour (highly recommended). We spent two nights and I don't know if it was because we were there during "off season" with less expensive rates or if it was just us, but the level of service was not what we expected. The resort itself is a site to take in, it is beautiful and decorated very nicely for Christmas. There were poinsettas everywhere and very colorful and festive trees. Our room (Intermediate) was absolutely lovely, very tasteful. The bed was awesome, with a very nice selection of pillows.

The food was incredible, the highlight of our trip. If you have the chance, get the Chicken Parmesean at the Forum, it was the best ever! I recommend making reservations for dining, we didn't know this and had to eat later than ususual. Make sure that you also dine in the main dining room, where the breakfast is great as well. Just keep in mind that this is a 5 star experience and you need to dress appropriately for dining and the casino. We did see some men wearing "borrowed ties" in the main dining room, men also need a jacket as well.

So here's why they didn't get 5 stars for our trip-the service. We were really expecting 5 star service and barely got 3.5 stars. We even had one staff member (waitstaff at lobby bar) that was rude and made fun of my husband, which he saw and made sure that the bartender knew about, but no one really made any big efforts to address the concern. But overall, I would rate the staff as "tired." Everyone just seemed worn out, many were friendly and only one was rude. Another example was a bus driver who told some corny jokes, ok by us, and then proceeded to say that he was just complained on by another guest about telling jokes. When we got out at the front portico, we choose to self-park and asked for directions and the valet sent us in the wrong direction. I purchased some makeup, in which I felt that I was bothering the clerk by asking for some information. We have been to other 5 star resorts and had much better service, cruises and all-inclusives definitely have better service than we experienced.

But a few things that made the trip worthwhile: the hot chocolate (every night we were there, they had hot chocolate and hot cider in the lobby) was to die for, the whipped cream was the best ever; tea time at 4pm daily; and the spa.

Overall, we had a very nice trip, mostly due to the actual building itself and the food. The service did not live up to our expectations, but I can say that this has been checked off of my bucket list. I will likely go on another cruise or all-inclusive for the money spent here.

We spent 2 nights at the Greenbrier in early December. The resort has "shopping weekend" discounts at their stores. If you are going to buy gifts or memorabilia, this is the time to do it. We enjoyed everything we did--the hotel tour, the bunker tour, the champagne toast and waltz in the casino, the carriage ride, and tour of the President's cottage. The restaurants are pricey but the food is excellent. I plan to return next December. The staff was accommodating and helpful.

We stayed at the Greenbrier from 12/16 to 12/19 and had two rooms for a family of 5. The hotel was decorated for the Holidays and was absolutely beautiful!! My wife and I stayed here a few years back prior to the addition of the Casino and the recent refurbishment that has taken place and the hotel is gorgeous, everything just perfect. There is much to do, ice skating, bowling, indoor pool, golf, carriage rides, bunker tour, dining, casinos, move theater, etc. This was a great trip for all of us and allowed our teenagers to experience a part of history. Finally, the service is phenomenal. We had dinner at The Forum, Drapers and had room service on our final night and all were fantastic, especially the room serivice. The staff is as nice as can be and it is quite apparent that they want to make sure that your stay is outstanding!!!! Rooms are very spacious and beautiful as well. Enjoy!!!!!

My husband and I just came back from a wonderful 3 days at the Greenbrier. What a wonderful and historical place. The hotel is first class, rooms very clean and comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The grounds are beautiful and the bunker tour should not be missed! I can't wait to return for another visit this summer! It is nestled in the mountains of West Virginia and is a very lovely resort.

Room Tip: We had a standard room and it was perfect!
