I had to attend a business event in downtown Charleston. Unfortunately the host hotel did not participate in my employer's negotiated rate program so I had to look elsewhere. This property fit the bill. The location is conveniently located off a major highway and a secondary route. About five miles from downtown. Parking is free; you'll need to rent a car at the airport but this seems to be more a function of Charleston's layout/lack of transportation options. The neighborhood seemed to be a slightly run-down residential area but no reason to feel unsafe. The room was a good size as was the bathroom. Both were clean. Lobby is tastefully decorated and has adequate public seating areas as well as a spacious dining area in which to enjoy the more than adequate continental breakfast. Unless I'm confusing properties there was also a small hot-tub room/mini-gym off a side entrance to the parking lot. Free computer access/business center behind the front desk. I can't tell you how helpful and friendly the front desk personnel were. Helpful with directions/suggestions. Also, volunteered to fax documents for me and another guest from front desk fax machine after business center fax machine malfunctioned.
No pool onsite; front desk directed me to walk across parking lot to adjacent Holiday Inn to use their pool, explaining that both properties have same corporate ownership and therefore share amenities. Holiday Inn lobby seemed more upscale, asked at front desk for access to pool and was granted code (although got major condescending vibe from the Holiday Inn front desk clerk--as if he were displeased with 'riff-raff' from adjacent property invading his beloved property. Elitism among sister properties? Really??
Gas station/convenience store within walking distance, also a handful of bars/restaurants (actually between 1/4 and 1/2 mile walk--certainly doable in nice weather). This nearby area also sports two antique malls and a native American burial mound (which seems to be one of the few attractions in Charleston). It made for a quick interesting diversion but I'll admit burial mounds are not generally high on my list of must-see attractions when I visit a city for the first time. I'll stay here again if I ever return to Charleston--it's a great, clean hotel with a convenient location and friendly staff!
