“Best place to stay at Snowshoe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

This is the best place to stay at Snowshoe. I have stayed at a lot of places at Snowshoe; the problems ranging from no heat in negative degree weather to people smoking drugs in the room next-door. Soaring Eagle had none of those problems! There is a underground parking garage so cleaning off a snowy car isn't an issue. They also have friendly staff that bring up your luggage for you. The room was nice but wasn't very well equipped. This also might be the only hotel with any chance of getting any phone service. Another plus is it is very close to the slopes.

Room Tip: If you care about a view, (the sunsets are fantastic) get a room not overlooking the parking lot.

I wasn't really expecting much for a Snowshow property based on some of the reviews I read for some of the other properties on top of the mountain...we were really pleasantly surprised when our room was really nice. The hotel is clean and looks almost new. The main lobby is very large and has a couple fireplaces with games, etc. for the family to play in front of a warm fire. A small bar located right in the lobby is nice for the parents. The lockers on the basement floor (assigned to each room) are clean and spacious and a walk out the door is literally footsteps from the lift. The hotel restaurant also has very good food and a great staff. In fact, the entire staff at the hotel were really terrific. Free parking below the hotel is nice too. The only downside is the walls between the rooms and the hallways are a bit thin so people arriving late at night and raising their voices down the hall can wake you unless you're a heavy sleeper. Overall, we would highly recommend the Soaring Eagle for anyone staying at Snowshoe.

We stayed here again in Snowshoe over the Christmas/New Year vacation. Soaring Eagle Lodge is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for a lovely building and are happy to ski and and out from downstairs! It's a short walk into town (10 minutes) or 2 minutes on a free shuttle (just make sure you have your gloves and coat zipped up waiting at the bus stop!).

We stayed in a third floor unit that overlooked the hot tubs last year and upgraded this year to the top corner condo that overlooks the village, lift and mountains. The condo was unit 404 on the 4th floor. The view from the unit is breathtaking! 180+ degrees of beautiful open scenery. The inside was also wonderful and is obviously well taken care of. A full kitchen with everything you can need. Great furnishings, (flat-panel TV's and blu-ray players in every bedroom!). Even a nice welcome message from the owners.

The hearth room at the entrance, now has a nice bar set-up with is great to just sit back and enjoy things away from the mountain. I would definitely recommend!

Room Tip: The corner condo 404 is amazing

You really have to love an adventure to stay here. It is in the middle of no where. However this is the nicest place on the mountain. The parking is underground, the restaurant is top notch and the front desk help couldn't be nicer. If you don't bring your food before you get there you may be in trouble. The rental company leaves you little or nothing to start with. No soap, 1 roll of TP and a pinch of salt. Otherwise you are on your own. Fortunately we were warned ahead of time and stocked up at the Walmart an hour or so away. The local grocery store has a small selection but no fresh fruits or veggies. A dinner in the village is a 2 hour wait. Make reservations for dinner at the restaurant before you come. Oh and we lost our power for 2 hours. We considered it an experience of a life time and since it took 10 hours to drive from BWI we are headed to Breckenridge this year. It is easier to get to.

Rooms and staff are great and the place is beautiful. If you are a skier who has lots of $$$ to burn and go in Jan or Feb, this is your place. There is a lift right at Soaring Eagle and restaurants to eat so you can make this place your base and never go to the Village.

But with that opulence comes price and this is the most expensive place to stay on the mountain. Again, if price is no concern, this is a great place. Another issue is that the Village is the central activity hub and this place is NOT within walking distance to the Village. You wind up paying premium price but need to take shuttle if you want to hit the comedy club or some of the bars in the Village. Lastly, the lift at Soaring Eagle tends to be one of the last to open every year. If you don't have the Soaring Eagle lift open, you have zero access to the slopes from your condo and MUST take the shuttle to the slopes.

Go to this place when you know the lift is open and you'll be happy. But there are other choices closer to the slopes that will also work for you

This was a last minute getaway I planned for my son's spring break. I did a lot of research online the weekend before, and decided on Soaring Eagle because it seemed to be one of the newest resorts and has great access to the lift. We were not disappointed!

The lodge is beautiful and our room (a 1 BR) was perfect for the three of us. The kitchen was nicely stocked with all the dishes & cooking gear that you need. Check-in is next door -- we arrived right before advertised check-in time (5:00 p.m.) and only had to wait about ten minutes. We booked through the resort, so everything was handled at the same check-in, including our lift tickets. The basement parking is nice and convenient to the elevators. The room was clean and well-maintained. The first night we had a problem with the fireplace lighting, but they fixed that in the time it took for us to have dinner.

Because we had a long trip up the mountain in the snow, we didn't feel like cooking or going to the Village the first night. We had dinner in the resort's restaurant, and the food was great. I will say that the chef liked to err to the rare side on both my filet and my husband's duck, but it was so good we didn't want to send it back for fear they would then overcook it, which is worse. Service was excellent.

As we planned on having a few meals in our condo, the lack of being in the Village proper was not a problem for us at all. Get groceries before you head up the mountain! We had lunch everyday in our condo and that saved a lot of money. As we had nice snow, we were able to literally ski off the Soaring Eagle lift and to the door of the heated ski locker room - very convenient!

They had three outside hot tubs, which were well maintained. Their fitness center is right inside the door from the hot tubs, so we used the sauna as a "people warmer" after our time outside.

The main room in the lodge is a beautiful place to gather before dinner, with great views and a bar that was open on certain nights (we were there Saturday).

I had only two negatives for this resort -- they could have used better soundproofing. We didn't hear our direct neighbors, but it sounded like a heard of elephants were above us at times. Word to the wise - ask for the top floor. The second is the bathroom lighting -- not quite bright enough and not at a flattering angle.

Another word of advice -- if you are coming in the snow from I-64, do not take the advertised exit off of I-64 East at highway 219. Instead, take the White Sulphur Springs exit, follow the signs to Highway 92N (you'll pass the beautiful Greenbrier resort as well as a Food Lion that sells a limited selection of wine) to WV-39 West to Marlinton, then take 219N to Snowshoe. We did this on our way up and then took 219 on the way down, and this is definitely a less treacherous route.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor to avoid noise of those walking around it ski boots and kids running around in...

This was our second stay at Snowshoe for a long snowboarding weekend. The first time, my husband and I stayed at Rimfire (see my TripAdvisor review), which was convenient to the heart of the Village, but was also very noisy and had no on-site staff for any kind of assistance. So this year we were in search of a peaceful/restful, more upscale accommodation. We found exactly that in Soaring Eagle!

We stayed in #409, which was beautiful and looked exactly as pictured or even better. Check-in was seamless - we were greeted at the front desk and were offered assistance with our luggage. We found everything we needed in this perfectly appointed condo. The bed was comfortable, and I was actually able to get some sleep since I never heard a sound from another guest despite the busy weekend. Two of my favorite amenities include the heated parking garage with plenty of spots, and the locker room on the first floor to safely store your gear. South Mountain Grille restaurant is also on the first floor, providing a convenient place to grab drinks or a bite to eat. The hearth room is gorgeous and provides a warm meeting spot to get a drink or a nice place to sit with a good book. Just next door to SEL is a small ski shop, another bar/restaurant and also a lift ticket window, so while it's not super close to the main part of the Village, you're not completely remote either. And you're only a few steps away from several trails and the Soaring Eagle Express lift, so this truly is a ski-in-ski-out property. This is the only place I'll stay in the future.

I would only hesitate to recommend Soaring Eagle Lodge if you prefer to be in the midst of all the action. Getting to the Village shops requires either a long, cold walk, or a short ride on the shuttle. The enclosed/heated shuttle stop is conveniently right outside the SEL building, and the shuttles do come quite frequently. But if you're wanting to walk right outside and get to all of the shops and restaurants, this might not be the best choice. We highly prefer quiet, restful sleep over everything else!
