“Very nice rooms, lovely setting, and beautiful views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

We enjoyed our weekend stay at the Bavarian Inn very much. In many respects, it did remind us of being in Germany. The inn's architecture, its setting on the river, and even the Rathskeller had a real Bavarian vibe. The service at the hotel and restaurants was almost always excellent, the rooms were well-appointed and very clean, and the meals were great. The brand new infinity pool overlooking the Potomac River was awesome!! There are several attractions nearby, including quaint Shepherdstown, nearby Harpers Ferry, and the Antietam Civil War battlegrounds.

We were very happy with our room in the Augsburg chalet. It was nicely appointed, quiet, and had a lovely view of the river. Everything was very clean. We appreciated the heavy-duty window coverings to keep out the early-morning sun. Our only "complaints" are very minor: the room was just a bit dark, partly due to the low-hanging window-treatment on the balcony door, and partly due to the balcony above us. Also, the bathroom (though perfectly clean) was showing signs of age.

There are several factors that visitors should consider when deciding which type of room to reserve - riverfront views vs. garden views, sensitivity to noise, budget, and room amenities such as fireplaces. There are 4 chalets (Augsburg, Bodensee, Chiemsee, & Danube), each with about 10 rooms. There is also the larger Schwarzwald building, which has another 30 or so rooms.

Views
The rooms in the chalets have riverfront views and are a bit more expensive than the Schwarzwald rooms. We loved being in a chalet looking out over the river, so our preference would be to return to a chalet. Most of the rooms in the Schwarzwald building have "garden views."

Noise levels
The traffic on the bridge crossing the Potomac can be somewhat noisy for some of the chalets. For light sleepers (like me!), the Augsburg chalet was perfect, as it is the furthest from the bridge and very quiet. The Bodensee chalet is next to the Augsburg and is probably also quiet. Light sleepers should definitely avoid the Danube chalet - it is right next to the bridge.

Other amenities
Within the chalets, we would have preferred to be on the top level. Rooms on the top floor are probably brighter (i.e., no balcony above) and would not have overhead noise from other guests. The upper-level rooms may be more expensive, but most have fireplaces and other amenities. We didn't know to specifically request a top-floor room when we booked, but we'll definitely do so next time.

Restaurants
We ate two breakfasts and one dinner at the Bavarian Inn's formal dining room, and one dinner in the Rathskeller. We enjoyed all our meals. The food was great, and the service was mostly great. The main dining room is more formal and has beautiful views of the river, pool, and grounds. The Rathskeller is downstairs and the atmosphere is casual. The menu and prices are virtually identical in the main dining room and the Rathskeller.

Again, we enjoyed our stay at the Bavarian Inn very much, and are looking forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: There are several factors to consider when deciding which type of room to reserve - riverfront views...

My husband took my mother and I out for dinner for Mother's Day last night, and as always we all had a great time. Even my five year old daughter loved her chicken tenders and French fries. Crab cakes were delicious and the bartender makes great cocktails. After dinner we checked out the new Infiniti pool, and we all fell inlove. Is there an option to pay$ and spend the day at your pool and have lunch?

Dear Valued Guest,
Happy Mother's Day. We are so happy you enjoyed your stay, and meal. With our new pool facility, we will be offering day passes to non-hotel guests, based on occupancy. Clearly our hotel guests will have priority on the pool. However, others can call in on a first come first served reservation basis and pay a nominal daily fee to use the facility based on availability. We truly look forward to welcoming you back for many more enjoyable experiences.
Sincerely,
The Asam Family

We just spent a long weekend at the Bavarian Inn. We spent one night in the lodge and two nights in the chalet. We really enjoyed it. It is a lovely setting. The infinity pool is really a nice feature. The staff is all very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint is that the rooms we were in had small bathrooms that could use some updating. However, we felt the price was a bargain. It is a nice location with lots of things to do within walking distance. Well worth the drive.

My husband and I had dreams of making it back to Hawaii for our big anniversaries but life gets in the way. Your place came highly recommended so we gave it a try for an overnight. Sure glad we did. What a beautiful place. Relaxing, amazing views. Customer service like no where else! Every person we came in contact with said "Happy Anniversary" (I guess it was mentioned in our reservations) What a nice touch! We walked downtown Saturday night to have dinner as there was a wedding on site that night. Found an awesome cafe. Blue Moon Cafe, the front desk was more then helpful with a map and suggestions. Enjoyed our balcony when we returned and again Sunday morning over coffee before lounging by the pool (in jeans and sweaters soaking up the April sun) before Brunch. Which was amazing by the way! We will try to make it an annual habit now to be back as we live nearby. Thank you for making our "big one" a special one!

The staff were extremely friendly, the area is scenic and gorgeous. The adjoining town is quaint with great food and fun shopping. The room was very clean, though some parts were a little older. Their restaurant was delicious. Overall we had a great time.

My wife and I stayed one night and had the Sunday brunch buffet the next morning. The Hotel is very nice and located within walking distance of the main street in Shepherdstown. The staff was excellent and everywhere we went we were greeted with a "happy anniversary". Our room was on the bottom floor of one of the Chalet's. The room had 2 queen beds a couch and a balcony. All of the furniture was very upscale and in good condition. The Balcony over looks the Potomac River and was great in the morning with a cup of coffee. There is a new infinity pool that is just finished and it is gorgeous. The pool itself would make an overnight stay worthwhile in the summer. We walked through Shepherdstown on Saturday evening. Be aware that most of the stores close at 6 on Saturday.

The Sunday brunch was fantastic. It was pricey but included just about anything you can imagine. Everything from seafood to Prime Rib. to made to order eggs and breakfast food. All of the food I had was outstanding.

Though the hotel is old. It still is a great overnight getaway for a couple. I highly recommend!

Room Tip: Pay the extra $10 a night for the river view rooms. Worth every penny.

We had high hopes of a great relaxing weekend in Shepherdstoan WV. Driving down Friday and coming back on Monday as a nice break from work for both my wife and I. Friday April 4 we got word that my father had a serious medical emergency and we were concerned that we would not be able to go on the trip at all. Ultimately we contacted the Inn and defined our circumstances and the person at the desk was not only sympathetic but also ready to work with us to try to save our trip if possible or to work with us to reschedule. She was fantastic.

Once we understood where things were with my and knew that My brother would be coming up on Saturday the 5th for support we rescheduled to come down that Saturday. We got to the Bavarian Inn at noon on the 5th and had a very welcoming reception from all the staff we ended up in contact with from that point onward.

We had a very nice room that had a balcony which overlooked the Patomac River with a view of Maryland on the other side. We had a very nice lunch in one of the dining rooms and then went to watch a couple of Softball games at Shepherds University. Softball was one of our purposes of going to the Inn which is located across the street from Shepherds University complex.

The room was fantastic with a nice gas Fireplace and a whirlpool tub. plenty of room to sprawl out and relax when we were in. Because we did not arrive on Friday we did not have a regular dinner in the formal dining room but we had done that during a previous trip to this town. We had breakfast in the formal dining room twice and also enjoyed their version of Sunday Brunch which was fantastic.

We would highly recommend The Bavarian Inn to anyone looking for a quick getaway only an hour and 45 minutes from Harrisburg PA.

Once again we can not say enough about the quality of the Inn over-all and the staff was fantastic. WE WILL BE BACK!!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a river view room in one of the Chalets
