Although I have no other reason to, I make a point of traveling through Romney now JUST so I can stay HERE!
Despite being born in WInchester, and traveling to WV often, I hadn't passed along this strip of rt. 50 (or heard of the Koolwink) until a few years ago when driving back from Clarksburg. There it was, beautifully illuminated (just after dark) along a quiet stretch outside Romney. Did such a double-take I almost ran the car off the road, and turned around for a closer look.
Like Mod Betty, I seek out vintage motels/restaurants, or roadside places. I'm usually dissapointed in some way, but was AMAZED at how intact and well-kept the Koolwink appeared. Although I was only two hours from home, I decided I HAD to stay here, and checked in. My mind was made up right away when stepping into the wonderful office, and talking to the professional, friendly front desk manager. My room rate was quite reasonable too.
Even better, the room was just as intact as the exterior. Attractive, roomy, VERY well kept, pristine-clean furnishings. Large, comfortable, firm bed, Big, fluffy pillows, nice lounge chairs, and VERY attractive light fixtures. The immaculate, period (but not kitchy) furnishings give the Koolwink a unique charm I haven't seen anywhere else. I have been to a lot of vintage motels but NEVER have I seen one that has retained its original character the way this one has.
Cleanest, nicest bathroom I have ever seen in a motel. The initial'ed shower curtains are a classy touch. Thick, soft towels too. No shortage of hot water here either, and the water pressure was just fine, even at the top of the hill. Nice to find a vanity outside the bathroom, only this one has a privacy divider you can close, what a nice touch. There was a small coffee maker, with cookies for the morning.
THANK YOU to the wonderful family who has preserved this place to such a high standard for us to enjoy. The National Trust for Historic Preservation needs to know about the Koolwink.
Definitely pick up a Koolwink cocktail glass or coffee mug when checking out!
Rooms in the newer wing on the hotel are farther from the highway and probably quieter.
