“Didn't want us”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

Called 2 weeks ahead and was told no reservation needed, just call when we are on the way. They are a 10 hour drive so called 5 hours into our drive and were told " i don't feel like cleaning the room so there is no room available". Made other arrangements and will not try again. Very disappointed

Room Tip: Make sure you have a back up plan as they close at will

I had never stayed at a B&B before so this was a nice surprise. My family had planned on staying at a hotel and called the owners when my sister told us how much she enjoyed her stay the night before. We arrived late in the evening and Jim was very hospitable. He showed us around and made us feel at home. The inn has a lot of character and is very clean and inviting. It has wonderful common areas and lovely porches. The location is perfect - right across from Pipestem State Park. It was a great change from our traditional hotel stay!

This was a strange stay. We'd stayed there before, and we really like the hosts, but this time, toward the end of April, we felt like the place was not quite open. We made our reservation online the night before, but since we'd not gotten a confirmation email, we phoned when we were an hour away. They had not checked to see if they had any guests but said to come on, they would love to see us. The room was ready, but they decided not to turn on the heat in that part of the building, and it was a bit chilly - we were not comfortable with the space heater they suggested. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with wi-fi and television (not all rooms have it - ask), but when we tried to locate our hosts in the evening to arrange for a breakfast time, they were nowhere to be found. We didn't see them in the morning, either, so at 7 (we are early risers) we just left a check on the kitchen table and departed, without breakfast. (We subtracted for the missing meal.) It's a charming place, a great location near Pipestem State Park, but it's best to make the reservations by phone and maybe wait until May or later when the local restaurants are more likely to be open. We give the place 3 stars because we know how nice it can be, but this time it was disappointing.

Room Tip: Best to phone in advance to be sure they know about your reservation, and April is probably too earl...

The Nostalgia Inn is a charming place in a beautiful location, literally across the street from Pipestem State Park. The rooms are spacious and clean, the hosts very friendly - we enjoyed a cocktail with them on the front porch. In fact, it felt as if we were visiting family, as we chatted with our hosts in the kitchen as breakfast was being prepared. It's a sprawling place, and we were the only visitors there, as the first week in May is pre-season, so we were able to explore the antiques, old photographs, and other decorations. We stayed two nights, and the breakfasts were both excellent. Other touches we enjoyed were the complimentary bottle of wine on our arrival, the abundant birds on the property, and the adjoining restaurant that is part of the family business.

The only reason we awarded 4 stars instead of 5 is that the building might have profited from some renovation. But on the other hand, renovation might have taken away from the old fashioned flavor and charm. For example, my wife spent some time photographing the chickadees living in an exterior wall where they had displaced a knot, and other birds were living in other exterior walls. Charming, but . . .. Everything worked fine, but it sometimes felt a little tired. But still - we'd stay there again if we were in the area.

Room Tip: We stayed in a two-bedroom suite, available if you want. Not all rooms have TV (ask if it's impo...

We were a little concerned reserving two nights in a place with so few reviews but it was a wonderful stay. It is not a historic place and the rooms were originally a sales office used for selling nearby RV lots but the present owner converted the space to six large and comfortable clean modern rooms.

The owners were wonderful to talk to and we spent an evening with a glass of wine sharing stories. Breakfast each morning was great.

The place is just outside the entrance to Pipestem Park.

We'd stay again in an instant if we ever come back to the area.

Our visits included stays in the Mingo and McDowell Suites…

Quick facts:
1. Website < http://www.nostalgiainn.com/>
2. If you access the Inn by turning onto the street/driveway directly across from the Pipestem Resort State Park turnoff…hug the left side of the gravel drive or you will end up in the trailer park area
3. Parking available for easy access to Inn
4. Spacious rooms named after surrounding counties in West Virginia and contain memorabilia from those counties
5. Full of fun art pieces and collections galore to browse
6. Breakfast was served at 0900 in their large dining room (coffee was perking and available for sipping by 0800)
7. There was always a pound cake available to nibble.
8. cash/checks/credit card
9. Lunch and Dinner options in the area: Brandon’s BBQ (run by their son) is just steps away. Dairy Queen (DQ) is a favorite for hot dogs, chili and ice cream in the area and has an amazing view of the Lake…Other venues in the area that were recommended, but we did not have time to try: Mountain Creek Lodge at Pipestem Resort and the Oak Supper Club
10. A few sites to see in the area: Pipestem Resort State Park; Bluestone State Park; Sandstone Falls; Town of Hinton; and New River Gorge area

Liked: the Inn Keepers! There is so much to do in the area and the Inn is such a warm inviting place to come home to in the evenings. We had only planned to stay one night, but changed our plans to return several days later and do more of the wonderful things in the area and stay in this welcoming Inn.

Things that might matter to others…Sound did travel through the walls a bit; this was not a deal breaker for me. Breakfast, while delicious and plentiful might not be as ‘gourmet’ as some expect from B&Bs in general.

Wish I had: tried the nearby SPA…think I needed more like a week in the area!!!

My friend and I recently stayed at the Nostalgia Inn for the weekend. It was an absolutely beautiful place to get away and relax. Ellie and Jim were wonderful, breakfast delicious, the inn charming. There was lemon pound cake available when we arrived and our gracious hosts were more than happy to share a glass of wine or cup of tea with us. The antiques and decor definitely make the place feel charming and there's a large common room, pool table, etc. Being an animal lover I also enjoyed meeting the inn felines outside. One of the great things about a bed and breakfast is also getting to interact with the other guests at breakfast and we had excellent company at the table.

The area is beautiful though remote and the park across the street has a wide variety of activities (hiking, horseback riding, lodge, restaurants, etc.). The spa and the restaurant near the inn are also excellent.
