The Nostalgia Inn is a charming place in a beautiful location, literally across the street from Pipestem State Park. The rooms are spacious and clean, the hosts very friendly - we enjoyed a cocktail with them on the front porch. In fact, it felt as if we were visiting family, as we chatted with our hosts in the kitchen as breakfast was being prepared. It's a sprawling place, and we were the only visitors there, as the first week in May is pre-season, so we were able to explore the antiques, old photographs, and other decorations. We stayed two nights, and the breakfasts were both excellent. Other touches we enjoyed were the complimentary bottle of wine on our arrival, the abundant birds on the property, and the adjoining restaurant that is part of the family business.
The only reason we awarded 4 stars instead of 5 is that the building might have profited from some renovation. But on the other hand, renovation might have taken away from the old fashioned flavor and charm. For example, my wife spent some time photographing the chickadees living in an exterior wall where they had displaced a knot, and other birds were living in other exterior walls. Charming, but . . .. Everything worked fine, but it sometimes felt a little tired. But still - we'd stay there again if we were in the area.
