“Beautiful location ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014 via mobile

This lodge is in a beautiful location and is a beautiful place itself. We stayed here for a class and enjoyed the amenities. The restaurant food was sub-par although an outside company runs that and is not under control of the state. We did not get to enjoy the pool but it was large. Do watch for the abundant wildlife while in the park.

We have gone here for 25 years to a conference and have never been displeased. In factor my husband and I have spent many a New Years Eve enjoying the scenery and the peacefulness of the place. In fact it is one of our favorite places to go and not that far from home. For the last maybe 20 years we have stayed in the cabins when on business with another couple. We cook dinner from anywhere to 6to 10 people , keep the fire going , play cards while everyone else goes to the conference. A great place to go whether to the conference or as just a couple for a wonderful quite get away. The staff is very hard to bet wherever you go. If anyone gets close to here I would suggest you go.

We were going tubing at Winterplace and decided to give this lodge a try. It's about 30 minutes from the ski resort, but the price couldn't be beat, and we thought we'd try something a little different. It was hard to decide whether to give this resort 4 or 5 stars. It's not something modern like a chain hotel, but it is an extremely nice lodge in unique natural surroundings with a wonderful atmosphere. There were lots of deer on the premises, and the indoor pool was very large and nice. There's also a game room for the kids, a beautiful lobby area with a fireplace, and a nice gift shop. The room was very clean. This room apparently had one of the upgrades because there was a huge flat screen TV, and there was new tile in the bathroom and what looked like new carpet in the room. The room was very well equipped with a hair dryer, ironing board, and a few toiletries. The room was extremely small, but it didn't bother us at all. It was very clean and comfortable. I had read some of the other reviews about the thin walls and noise, but we weren't bothered. When we first arrived, the room smelled a bit musty, but the kids had walked out the balcony door, and the musty smell soon went away, and we didn't smell it anymore. I have terrible allergies, and my son has asthma, but after that initial odor, we weren't bothered for the rest of our visit. It snowed about six inches that night, so we ate at the restaurant in the lodge. The resort is too far from anything, especially when there's snow, to leave and go eat anywhere else and then drive right back. There is a very highly rated restaurant nearby, but it was closed for the season. Anyway, we ate in the lodge restaurant, and it was fine. The food wasn't great, but it was okay. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere, and the waiter was impeccable. He was a college student who worked there in the restaurant, and he made us feel very comfortable. The prices were a little high; for example, $8.50-$9.00 for a burger and fries. However, the portions were large. All of the other staff were very nice and made us feel very welcomed. We made a very good decision in choosing to stay here. This really added to our trip, and we would definitely stay here again. Just a quick note: The elevator broke twice while we were there. I think this may be a common occurrence. I chose to use the stairs. However, even with this, it was a great lodge!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 2nd floor. We requested a higher floor, but that's all they had, and it worked...

We stayed a the Mountain Creek Lodge which is located at the bottom of the gorge and only accessible by the tram. It was a wonderful experience - but next time we will probably stay at the main lodge - McKeever. While the tram ride to the bottom of the gorge was fun and scenic - it did restrict your movements. The lodge rooms were simple, but clean and comfortable. The free breakfast was nice and included many items (including fresh fruit, oatmeal, pastries, hard boiled eggs, and bagels). It was a unique place and we loved sitting on our ground-level balcony seeing the deer feeding at the apple tree in the yard. We hiked most of the trails (be warned--the descriptions were not accurate--most were much longer than stated) and had a great time outdoors! Food in the McKeever lodge was OK, your typical State Park fare. Overall, it was a relaxing, fun weekend and we will definitely do it again.

A beatiful place to find peace and quiet. Not a luxury resort, but it has everything that my husband and I were looking for as part of our Journey of Love. A spectacular view of the Bluestone Gorge and beautiful sunsets. The front desk staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. We had no reservation and thanks to the two young ladies in the front desk for helped us to stay two nights. Thanks a lot( Excuse me for not asking your names, but thanks to the two ladies at the front desk on September 10 at 6:00 pm). Room was clean and spacious. Run for your live and don't go to the Restaurant. Very Expensive, worst breakfast and poor service. UNFRIENDLY Restaurant Staff. Princeton is at 15 miles and has a lot of restaurants and fast foods. Ease access if you want to visit Sandstone State Park; Sandstone Falls; New River Gorge, Grand View and many other spectacular places. I recommend this Hotel and would stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for the gorge view room. Avoid rooms in front of parking lot; you heard voices all the time.

We stayed in McKeever and had a room with a great view of the gorge through a full wall of windows and balcony. Beds were not the most comfortable but rooms were clean and well kept. Food was expensive and not all that great at the Lodge. (we took our own breakfast and lunch foods) We did eat at Mountain Creek at the bottom of the gorge (rode a tram down) and that food was excellent...just pricey. The lodge is beautiful with heated swimming pool, game room, reading room and gorgeous views. We felt that the room cost was reasonable. Staff was friendly and helpful. We did a lot of hiking on the many trails all around the park. Deer were abundant but we also saw a fox and bald eagles. This is a place to come and enjoy outdoor activities or else just sit and relax and enjoy nature. At night the sky is filled with stars if you get away from the lodge. One other thing, if you are a light sleeper, bring a white noise machine or ear plugs as doors slamming in the halls can be quite loud.

Room Tip: gorge view at McKeever!!

This review is for the campground. Very woodsy which we love, paved roads and paved pads with fire rings BUT the sites are very unlevel. Had we not had boards we would have been way off the ground on one side. Saw plenty of other campers also that way. Close to other points of interest also. Road the tram down to the bottom which was nice and visited Sandstone falls. We camped in motor home.
