“Rennovations Finally Being Done!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Just returned from our fifth stay at Pipestem. We go with a golfing group of 20 each summer, and stay three nights. I always ask for a gorge view room on the 4th floor. These rooms have balconies and sliding doors, so yu can enjoy the view and feed the deer that stroll below the rooms. Our room had been rennovated, since our last stay. It had new beds, a huge flat screen TV, and the bath had a new sink, tub, commode and paint. It was very clean and comfortable. We had breakfast each morning in the hotel restaurant, ordering from the menu, and it was very good. We had dinner there one night, with a large group, and the food and service were very good. The only negative for this trip was they were laying new carpet, in the lobby, during the day and you could not get to the elevator or front desk without hiking around the building. Also, they had all the lobby furniture covered, thus not allowing for a seated gathering area for our group. I would have thought they would have laid carpet, during the night while there was not much traffic, in the lobby. The tram ride and the restaurant at the bottom of the gorge is a must for first time visitors but be very careful when planning to be sure the tram is operating! It has very irregular hours. The gift shop at the tram is nice. I look forward to going again next summer, and hopefully, the entire lodge rennovations will have been completed!! If you are a golfer, ask about their special golf package. It is a great value!

Room Tip: Ask for the third or fourth floor gorge view!

Our family hold our reunion here every couple of years. I always stay at the McKeever Lodge- others rent cabins. I must say it's a great value- there are alot of things to do- swimming, game rooms, 2 golf courses, disc golf, horseback riding, fishing, paddle boats, trails, entertainment in the ampitheater, and lots more! The place is clean and well kept. It's cool!
There was a baby in the room next to us and we heard him a little, but it was ok. not too much for us to handle.

Room Tip: Request a "gorge view" for a beautiful sunrise! Room service was "average" only...

This was our third visit to Pipestem and was the best yet. We wanted to share this beautiful state resort park with our grandchildren and booked a suite at McKeever Lodge for Memorial Day weekend. It was under $100 per night and was perfect for our group of five. We were informed by a friendly and helpful employee (and most employees there were) that our suite had just been remodeled and we were the first to stay there. The room was very large and tastefully decorated. We especially loved the view of the gorge from the sliding glass doors, which led out to small balcony. Late each evening, we saw three deer grazing below, and on the last night we were there, a very pregnant doe appeared. We thought we were actually going to see her give birth, as she napped under some small trees for awhile. When we returned from supper, she was gone, however. There is so much to do at Pipestem - something for everyone. We also enjoyed shopping at the gift shops there. The scenery is wonderful and the park is very well-maintained. We were disappointed because the aerial tramway was broken, as we were going to splurge and have dinner at Mountain Creek Restaurant, which is located at the bottom of the gorge; we have eaten there before and it was outstanding. West Virginia has some of the best state parks we have visited, and we hope to return to this beautiful place in the fall.

Room Tip: Get a suite overlooking the gorge - we stayed on the third floor and the view was breathtaking.

We stayed here for one night after making online reservations. First of all, what a bargain! We stayed in a mountain view room in McKeever Lodge and the view was stupendous for an almost ridiculously low price. Also, in response to the reviewer who mentioned not knowing about checking in at McKeever for the Mountain Creek Lodge: the website is very specific and so is the reservation form we received prior to staying. This resort has all kinds of activities to interest most anyone: swimming, hiking, biking, shuffleboard, horse riding, a gameroom, small reading area, arboretum, nice gift shops, restaurants/snack shops and the aerial tram. Our room had a nice balcony where we watched a doe and her fawns scamper about and also witnessed an amazing sunset. Our room on the 4th floor was clean and the beds were comfortable, with fitted sheets and everything we needed for a nice stay. Other people have mentioned noise but we did not experience that but I must add that I learned many years ago to travel with a white noise machine. It will pay for itself many times over! We definitely hope to return because this is a wonderful place to chill out: no need to leave for anything! The staff members were all friendly and I highly recommend this park as a place to stay. Much better than I could have possibly imagined!

You can read about the great scenery and all the activities elsewhere, I just have a few more personal details on which to focus.

Nowhere did we see any indication that we had to check-in at the McKeever Lodge even though we were staying at the Mountain Creek Lodge down in the gorge. No signs, no questions from the guys operating the tram line. So after riding the tram down 1000', 6 minutes, we found out we had to go back up and drive over to the other lodge to check-in.

Patricia at the lower gift shop was very helpful and understanding, allowing us to leave our luggage there while we went to the other lodge. With the driving and the waiting for a tram we were in our room one hour after we arrived at the park. Talk about a negative initial impression.

Then I was told not to be critical of the beds-we had reserved a one bed room with a couch, but received a room with two beds, so we had a choice of them-after all some people like sleeping on hard beds. Let me just say, if you like sleeping on the floor, you'll like the beds-hard and harder.

Finally there is a dining room at the lower lodge that is definitely four-star, or is it five-star, and charges accordingly. Without getting exact, I'd say our meal for two with tip was close to the cost of staying one night at the lodge. Then the next morning the continental breakfast-which was not bad by hotel standards-was all plastic plates, plastic silverware, and much, much plastic waste, a big change from dinner with its linen napkins and heavy silverware. A better deal is the Bluestone Dining Room at the McKeever Lodge.

When all is said and done, we'll probably be going back again, though. We never got tired of riding the tram.

Our room on the second floor had a wonderful view of the gorge and the woods. We weren't quite high enough to see all the way down into the gorge but for the cheapest rate I was really pleased. We could also look down and occasionally see deer nibbling on the well kept lawn surrounding the lodge. Unfortunately I wasn't able to enjoy our lovely balcony as much as I had hoped because cigarette smoke from neighboring rooms kept wafting over to our balcony and even into our room. It was a shame because otherwise on that pleasant evening it would have been perfect to leave the balcony door open and enjoy fresh air instead of AC.
The other problem, as many people have noted, was the noise. The people directly above us did not seem to be rude or unusually loud, they were just walking softly around their own room. But we heard every step they made. And any time someone opened or closed a balcony door it sounded like it was in our room. Luckily, our neighbors didn't stay up late and we slept well through a very peaceful and quiet night. But when the people upstairs got up in the morning, there was definitely no choice but for us to wake up too.

I thought the room itself was fine - perhaps it was one of the updated ones? It was clean, the bath towels were unusually thick and nice. Every staff person we encountered was extremely friendly and pleasant. In fact, everything was just fine - except for the fact that the walls and ceilings are paper thin.

Pipestem Resort and State Park has been our Memorial Day weekend destination for several years now. The mountain views are breath-taking, the activities are family oriented and well planned, and the entire staff is professional, courteous, and helpful. The rooms are clean (newly renovated very nicely too), and pretty basic (no frills) but, with all that there is to do around there, you do not spend much time in the room anyway.
The meals in the dining room are very good at a good price. We ate breakfast there almost every morning and had dinner once or twice, and enjoyed each meal. The renovated cafe is very nice and offers snacks, ice cream, coffee drinks, etc. The ladies that worked in the cafe this weekend were very sweet.
There is something for everyone here at Pipestem, and at a great value!

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a "Gorge view" room.
