“Mediocre at Best... Great for the masses, but not for a true fan of BBQ”
I was so excited when I heard that Morgantown was finally getting a BBQ place. You see I am a BBQ geek. I live for the stuff. Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork... It doesn't get any better.
While I had never been to a "Maritins BBQ Joint" (I think perhaps this is only the second one), and I usually prefer locally owned places, I have been to a Smokey Bones (another BBQ Chain) and the food there was pretty good. So I was pretty psyched.
Finally the big day comes. I go and try to get some take out only to find out they are out of pretty much everything. Thats ok, because if you are running out then that means it is being made fresh and is just another good sign.
Next day I go back and get a sampler with ribs, pork, and brisket along with their version of cornbread, some fries, slaw and another side or two.
It has been a while since this day, and the day that I am writing this review, so I won't try to recall specifics about the meal because like a lot of bad experiences you try to remove them from your mind. I will however let you know that both my wife and I spent more of the next day on the toilet than off of it (good thing we have multiple bathrooms).
SO... being the fan of BBQ that I am, and how desperately I wanted Morgantown to have a great BBQ place, a few weeks later I decided to give it another shot. This time we didn't have to spend the day on the toilet, but it was still very lackluster. This time we got some wings, and I will say that the wings are the best thing they offer. It will be a while before I spend the money on their mediocre BBQ again.
Now many people like this place, and like most chain restaurant concepts it's goal is to appeal to the masses and it appears they are doing a great job of it. But for anyone who is a true fan of real BBQ, for those of you like myself who plan vacations around where you can eat great ribs, if you are a BBQ fanatic, you will probably find Martin's to be mediocre at best.
