“A study in contrasts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2013

Located atop a hill which provides nice views, the dramatic portico and impressive lobby (beautifully decorated for Christmas when we were there) tell you this was a good hotel in its heyday. They're clearly trying to catch up - they're nicely renovating the rooms. I would never have chosen the hotel based on the terrible reviews, but I got a great price through Priceline. I requested a renovated room with a view and got it. The room was nice and the bed very comfortable, although it had just a light blanket so I had to bring in a sleeping bag I had in the car. There was a broken window which had been taped up - a detraction from the work they'd done updating the room. The new HVAC unit was typical of hotels - and horrid. No thermostat, and the fan is on constantly, droning on and blowing cold air when the heat cuts off. The hot dry air gave me a bad headache - finally draped a wet towel over the unit which dramatically helped. Front desk staff when we arrived was very friendly and professional - what looked to be a college student checked us out and acted like he could care less. The restaurant had tremendous food at great prices - plus there was a 10% discount. But even there, in the dining room there was a strong smell - seemed like dampness - which you could feel in your lungs. We moved to the lounge, which was better. Breakfast was great and was served in the dining room, which makes it classier than most hotel breakfasts. Pets are allowed free and the spacious grounds provide a great place to walk them. Very easy access to the interstate.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a renovated room with a view.

Hotal is very grand looking and they put us on 4th floor thay has been renovated but first room deadbolt didnt line up so was useless. Second room deadbolt just barely locked. Boths rooms the bathroom door didnt lock and toilet barely flushed. For reno9 rooms it needs much work.

There is nothing spectacular about this hotel. It's inexpensive and close to downtown, so while we were there for a football game, it was just what we needed. The rooms need updated, yes, but they were very clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful. There is plenty of parking, and the breakfast buffet that is included was very good.
