“Wrong Choice”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2011 via mobile

Stopped by for lunch on a Sunday.

Combo plate of Orange Chicken and Chow fun was grossly overbreaded, greasy and included only 2 pieces of poorly trimmed and undercover (raw) broccoli. For $9.75.

“worst food ever”

Avoid this crap at all costs. When I ate there I was given rotten meat, which I barfed out later.

“Good Chinese, especially for lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2010

Great Wall is a great place for college students to get their Chinese food fix. The location, the fact that it's right on High St., makes it a viable, inexpensive lunch option for students who have some time in between class. There is a decent amount of seating in the restaurant, so you don't just have to get takeout. The food quality is usually pretty good, depending upon who is cooking, but delivery is often quite slow. Because Great Wall is fairly inexpensive, I eat there quite often, but it's not the place to go if you are looking for something special.

“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2009

I've been going to Great Wall for take-out since they opened -- it's take-out or delivery only (although I've occasionally seen students slurping down at the single tiny table they have). That's over 10 years I guess ... I can't remember exactly. Have also tried every other Chinese/Asian restaurant to exist in Morgantown since the 80's, and many others from Florida to New York to Asia itself.

Here's the low-down:

Quality of food: 3 out of 5
Quantity of food: 5 out of 5
Price: 4 out of 5

That translates to "good value"; you get reasonably decent food, in generous amounts, for a price that can only be beaten in places like New York's Chinatown. If you're into really top-notch Chinese food, this is not the place. They cut the veggies and meat very chunky and coarse, and the sauces and flavorings are just average. Sometimes the meat, beef in particular, is of so-so quality (not tender). You can find better quality Chinese food in Morgantown, but you'll get less of it and pay quite a bit more. If you're just hungry for something tasty, and counting your nickels, this place is awesome.

For example, their eggrolls are the biggest and heaviest in Morgantown, good and substantial, and above average quality, but also the cheapest you can find. Same goes for fried wontons.

A large delivery truck frequently unloads fresh ingredients from New York City, which explains how they're able to deliver such good value in West Virginia.

As for service:
5 out of 5, if you give them a chance, and have some patience

I've seen a slew of relatives, relatives of relatives, students, and random hires working the front counter. The ones who are ethnically Chinese may speak English natively, or be so bad you can't tell for sure if they have a clue what you actually ordered. But give them a chance, and they are happy to please, including altering dishes, ingredients, "healthiness," etc. however you like. On the rare occasions where I've had a problem (order filled wrong, dish not cooked right) they are quick to make it right with no hassle.

No particular dish stands out in my mind as worthy of a special recommendation, however, I've never once tried anything there I would call lousy.

Be warned, though, they can be EXTREMELY busy at times, so don't be impatient. They're slow then. One harried lady, the manager I think, seems like she might bite your head off at those times, but she's actually very nice. I've seen customers get upset due to long waits, or mistakes in orders, but that's the price you have to pay for a place that is VERY popular. Chill out and you'll be happy with this place.
