I'm a Huntington native who now lives out of state, and I remember when this hotel was built - as a Holiday Inn. When I come to Huntington, I need a hotel that is centrally located. I'm also there for several days, so I need the bed to be comfortable. In order to assure the comfortable bed, I book the "executive level" room. Pricey for Huntington, but the room is supposed to come with a refrigerator and a free movie each night, as well as free wireless internet service. These rooms also come with "Sleep-Number Beds", which are more comfortable than the average hotel mattress. On the downside, the only parking available is Valet Parking, and the valets work for "tips only'.
When we checked in this year, the week of the Carrie Underwood concert, there was no refrigerator - I had to request one, and then, when it arrived, it had to be put in the far corner of the room, because there were not sufficient outlets. That's when I noticed that there were insufficient outlets, and lots of multi-plug adapters in most of the outlets. The lack of outlets became an issue when using our own electronics - laptops, phone chargers, ipod chargers, etc. We almost always had to unplug the refrigerator.
Although the room was pretty clean, every floor in the hotel smells of mildew, masked by some industrial-strength odor controller.
The motivation of the front desk staff depends upon who is on duty. Sometimes, we received appropriate assistance, and other times, none at all. I have witnessed the desk clerks taking personal calls while they are assisting customers, and I have noticed obvious "tiffs" between desk clerks. Very unprofessional.
When we checked out, I went to the desk and asked for a copy of my bill before any charges were made to my credit card. However, I was handed a copy of the bill after my credit card was charged (the desk clerk having been distracted by a "tiff" with the night clerk) which included charges for all movies and internet connections. The night clerk had not delivered one under our door during the night.
Because of the way the billing system is designed, I had to wait while each of the over-charges was manually credited back to my credit card, and this was difficult to reconcile with the bill to make sure that I had received all of the appropriate credits. My checkout took about 40 minutes.
I have to say that, without exception, it is the housekeeping staff that has always been the most hospitable and professional. I usually travel with teenagers, who sleep in, and the housekeeping personnel have always been most accomodating. They have been happy to provide extra towels, clean glasses, more pillows, whatever we ask. And they have always done it with a smile and even a pleasant greeting if they recognize us elsewhere in the hotel.
