Huntington's Pullman Plaza Hotel was, at one time, part of a well known hotel chain. The facilities are clean but a little dated. The restaurant is very pricey, but the food was good. The hotel provides two complimentary drinks in the bar adjacent to the restaurant, but the options are limited to the house brands of whisky, and the house brands are unimpressive.

The hotel does offer a complimentary full breakfast buffet. The breakfast menu did not change the three days of our stay--scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, rolls, biscuits, gravy, fruit, cereal, juices.

I'm a tea drinker, and I experienced a little glitch being served hot water for the tea bags, and the tea offered is a local or "off brand." Coffee drinkers have no problem with frequent refills and coffee service in the rooms.

The hotel is across the street from Huntington's newer shopping mall. The hotel is in easy walking distance of a number of churches, and it's not too far of a walk to the nearby Marshall University, although the hotel shuttle to the university may be preferred on a cold day.

Overall, the stay was pleasant with no significant problems other than the bathroom lights failed one morning, and on the morning a travel tour group was in the hotel the bath water was at best "tepid."

  • Liked — Convenience
  • Disliked — Lack of morning hot water on one morning and tea selection in the dinning room

I'm a Huntington native who now lives out of state, and I remember when this hotel was built - as a Holiday Inn. When I come to Huntington, I need a hotel that is centrally located. I'm also there for several days, so I need the bed to be comfortable. In order to assure the comfortable bed, I book the "executive level" room. Pricey for Huntington, but the room is supposed to come with a refrigerator and a free movie each night, as well as free wireless internet service. These rooms also come with "Sleep-Number Beds", which are more comfortable than the average hotel mattress. On the downside, the only parking available is Valet Parking, and the valets work for "tips only'.

When we checked in this year, the week of the Carrie Underwood concert, there was no refrigerator - I had to request one, and then, when it arrived, it had to be put in the far corner of the room, because there were not sufficient outlets. That's when I noticed that there were insufficient outlets, and lots of multi-plug adapters in most of the outlets. The lack of outlets became an issue when using our own electronics - laptops, phone chargers, ipod chargers, etc. We almost always had to unplug the refrigerator.

Although the room was pretty clean, every floor in the hotel smells of mildew, masked by some industrial-strength odor controller.

The motivation of the front desk staff depends upon who is on duty. Sometimes, we received appropriate assistance, and other times, none at all. I have witnessed the desk clerks taking personal calls while they are assisting customers, and I have noticed obvious "tiffs" between desk clerks. Very unprofessional.

When we checked out, I went to the desk and asked for a copy of my bill before any charges were made to my credit card. However, I was handed a copy of the bill after my credit card was charged (the desk clerk having been distracted by a "tiff" with the night clerk) which included charges for all movies and internet connections. The night clerk had not delivered one under our door during the night.

Because of the way the billing system is designed, I had to wait while each of the over-charges was manually credited back to my credit card, and this was difficult to reconcile with the bill to make sure that I had received all of the appropriate credits. My checkout took about 40 minutes.

I have to say that, without exception, it is the housekeeping staff that has always been the most hospitable and professional. I usually travel with teenagers, who sleep in, and the housekeeping personnel have always been most accomodating. They have been happy to provide extra towels, clean glasses, more pillows, whatever we ask. And they have always done it with a smile and even a pleasant greeting if they recognize us elsewhere in the hotel.

From the minute I pulled into the Valet area, the service began. Every employee from that point until my departure was super friendly, helpful and professional. Housekeeping was first class and the breakfasts were quite good. I'm a Marshall grad and Pullman fan who will return. I coudn't have been treated any nicer or slept in a nicer facility. The added bonus was the super river view from my room. Thanks, Pullman!!

  • Disliked — Could use better lighting in the bathroom.

Heading home to Virginia we needed a place to spend the night, all the hotels near the interstate were booked so we drove into town and discovered the Pullman Plaza, which looks very expensive.

They had rooms available, quoted at $109. but the desk asst. asked if we had AAA, which gave us a rate of $89 with breakfast included. This was a hot / full buffet, not just a continental breakfast that is"free" at most motels.

The hotel was nice, except that the room felt very damp...but since it was just one night and it was already 1am, we didn't bother to change rooms. The bed was very comfortable....

  • Liked — rate, comfortable bed

Poor Pitiful Pullman Plaza. Do not stay at the Pullman if you expect a good experience. It starts with guest relations, and that is a foreign concept to the staff at this hotel. The valet parking is even a joke. It took two hours to retrieve a claim ticket once my vehicle was parked. (It was more important for the car jockey to casually enjoy his frozen frappe from Starbucks, while the security guard/night manager perused the newspaper.)

The customer service at the front desk was the worst. I asked for a quiet room and was first sent to a room directly across from the elevator. The second room assigned was neatly tucked in behind the vending machines. I had worked a 13-hour day and said that any floor would be fine, I really just needed a quiet room. Somehow that translated into a request to have my headboard back up to an ice machine.

This hotel does boast the worst front-desk staff employees I have ever encountered. They even took personal calls while checking me in while I waited with my hand out for the key. I was amazed that one husband came in on his day off to hang out with his wife who was working. And his wife was their only saving grace at the desk. She could do the work of two staff members. Her co-worker, Fred, was just plain lazy, mean, and disrespectful.

One word of caution: stay away from the fitness center. It looks like the ceiling is not finished caving in yet. And maintenance is obviously in no rush to repair it.

My experience at the Pullman grew exponentially worse. The Holiday Inn is very close, and the Ramada is only a few miles away. Spend your hard-earned money somewhere else. The Pullman is indeed a pit; a pitiful imitation of a hotel operation.

  • Liked — I would say checking out, but it was a mess. The night manager strolled out with his breakfast in tow, while four customers waited at the desk where only one lady was working. And she was singing/belting out Gospel.
  • Disliked — Fred. Carl. The valet joke.
