“Worth the short trip off the highway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2012

We stumbled upon this place on a holiday roadtrip. After driving for quite a bit and seeing the highway signs, we decided to take a chance and exit the highway. We had hoped to pick up some moonshine as a unique gift for a friend but it was Sunday and they could only sell wine or tap beer.

We sampled the wine selection and found that most of them were pretty pleasing. We sampled the moonshine and really had nothing to compare it too. The man in the group enjoyed the purer forms while I, the woman, enjoy the fruitier flavors.

The gentleman behind the counter seemed nice enough and was willing to talk about the catering business and suggested we take a trip upstairs to see the building. It seemed like a really great place to have a small gathering with a fireplace and neat chairs from barrels and other "farm" type implements.

“Buckwheat Moonshine - unique spirits in unique bottles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2011

Pinchgut Hollow Distillery and Heston Farm Winery are two sides of the same coin; housed in the same facility. Both are local, family owned and operated businesses. The common facility is located on the 220 acre family farm. Newly opened in the spring of 2011, this first-rate facility has quickly gained local popularity and has become a destination place on a much wider scale. Located conveniently only about one (1) mile off of I-79, Exit 135 (Pleasant Valley exit at Fairmont, WV) at 1602 Tulip Lane; follow the signs. They are open seven (7) days a week (no whiskey sales on Sunday): Mon – Thurs, 9 am – 6 pm; Fri – Sat, 9 am – 8 pm; and Sunday, 1 pm – 6 pm. The phone number is (304) 534 – 2516.

The distillery currently offers four (4) spirits: straight Moonshine, Honey Peach Moonshine, Apple Pie Moonshine, and Buckwheat Moonshine. The uniquely designed bottles are shaped like a pig standing on its head – guess where the cork goes? You should ask Mickey Heston or his son Michael, whose dreams and drive created the enterprise, about the stories behind the bottles and the recipes. All ingredients are natural, and no artificial flavorings are used. I’m amazed of how they can get the Apple Pie Moon to taste like apple pie. The Buckwheat Moonshine is reputed to be legally licensed and made in only three (3) places in the world; one in France, one in Japan, and the Pinchgut Hollow Distillery. The buckwheat is homegrown in WV. The Hestons are continually experimenting and coming up with new concoctions. I believe that hot pepper moonshine is in the development stages and may be available in the near future.

After whetting the appetite with a tasting session (tasting is $4 and includes the wines and a souvenir wine glass), the basic menu includes Panini, traditional sandwiches, and sides. The sandwiches are mostly in the $6 to $7 range and to make a platter with baked beans and slaw is $2 more. The menu sometimes offers “specialty” items such as Mickey’s homemade soup beans and cornbread or other items. Just ask. The staff is friendly, helpful, and informative. They also offer Bud Lite and two (2) hand-crafted micro brews from the Mountain State Brewery for those who enjoy beer with a meal.

The Heston family and staff have created a great destination place for spirit tastings, country-style food, concerts, and special events. Weekend concerts from a wide variety of artists and musical styles are offered most weekends all year around. Check their Facebook page under “Heston Farm” for the current concert schedule. Weather permitting, the concerts are held outside in the courtyard which features a stage and many mementos from past farm life and local history as well as rustic metal sculptures of farm animals. The tasting room, meeting rooms, and lounge are themed with bygone era farm memories and mementos such as uniquely designed stools of metal tractor seats with pitchfork supported backrests atop of ax-handle legs.

As with most of my favorite places, this is a leisurely place. Don’t be in a hurry. Take your time and enjoy the creative farm-themed ambiance that has been so thoughtfully fashioned here. The atmosphere is leisurely and relaxed. The combination of great spirits, food, music, and friends is a great recipe for a good time. And besides… you can taste and purchase one of the most unique spirits in the world, West Virginia Buckwheat Moon!

“Wonderful Moonshine and tasty wine!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2011

I'm sure if we hadn't been there so early in the morning at 10 off the interstate; they would have been more prepared. The tastings were wonderful and I recommend supporting this small business. I believe, they're still learning, so be patient. I believe, they'll educate themselves more on how to present the wine tastings as a suggestion from us and others. The only suggestion to say "HI" and tell your customers what you're doing and you'll be with them in a moment once I count the drawer/open versus not saying anything. The young man really does seem willing to answer any questions and helpful and KIND!!!

If you do the wine tasting, it's $4.00 and you receive a free wine glass. Definitely worth it!
