“Family Ski Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

New lodge is beautiful! We stayed for three nights with family. We had a suite which was adjoined by a room with two Queen beds. It was awesome for 4 adults and 3 children! The living space in the suite came equipped with a mini kitchen/bar with a sink, fridge, utensils, glasses, and plates/bowls. Nice size table for eating, L shaped couch, fire place and some other comfy chairs. Rooms were very reasonably priced. Lodge also had a pool/sauna/hot tub. Kids used the pool and had fun with other children. Breakfast buffet at the lodge was worth the money. Huge selection for breakfast and filled you up for the day of skiing. We did eat dinner once at the lodge. Standard hotel banquet fair. Food was okay, but not a bargain for the kids so we decided to eat out or order from a local place and bring it back to our room. We have picky eaters so buffet style for dinner is not the way to go with small kids. 5 and under are free at the buffet for both breakfast and dinner which worked out well. All of the staff in the lodge were very nice and accomodating. Very friendly, always asking how we were doing, if we needed anything and always greeting us. We loved our stay and our kids want to come back again to skii. This was their first time skiing and despite the weather, we still managed to have an awesome time!!!

We stayed at a rustic cabin and it was ...not bad. When I made the reservation,I was told that the rustic cabin did not have television service. That was ok by me for the weekend. My wife and I took our 2 and 4 year old so this was a good without tv weekend. What they did not tell us is there is no telephone in the room and the area has poor cell phone service. It his part is really alarming to me for emergency purposes.
With that said, the cabin had 2 bedrooms with linens, 1 room with a full and 1 with 2 twins. There was an additional cot and a pull out sofa so it could have slept 6 comfortably. They give you firewood and you can have fires in the cabins.
Overall, the area is beautiful and it is only a couple miles from 2 ski resorts.

Thank you for sharing your feedback! Our rustic cabins are perfect for those looking to disconnect and get back in touch with nature, but you are correct, we should have done a better job communicating the amenities included with the cabins. I have sent your thoughts to our front desk team to ensure we do a better job with this.
We hope you have the opportunity to visit us again. Thank you for visiting Canaan Valley.

The overall experience at the new lodge was outstanding. Lodge rooms were excellent, dining room and service were excellent, the new lounge is beautiful and relaxing.
One suggestion for improvement; please have staff at check-in explain where the lodge rooms are located [north or south wing]. This is important even for those of us who had stayed several times in the former lodge room set up.
Everything about our stay at Canaan Valley Resort was outstanding.

Canaan valley resort does have a beautiful new lobby, gift shop and rooms with a welcoming staff and friendly, helpful servers.

Our party dined, skied and relaxed comfortably despite the forecast! Kids enjoyed the deer that visited in the late afternoon and we all found plenty of space to spread out in for some down time at the spa! We plan to return!

I've been to the resort a few years back, but I was surprised just how nice it is now. Big rooms, nice lobby, all kinds of goodies in the bathroom. There was a yellow school bus to shuttle skiers to the lifts. It's not slopeside, but only 2 miles away. And the heater unit is a bit loud as it turns itself on and off, but at least the thermostat is easy to handle and comprehend. The restaurant is fine, the lobby has a fireplace and lots of comfy couches, and I liked the hot tub after skiing. Great value for the price.

Room Tip: I stayed in the North Building and the room was great.

Our second trip to the Canaan Valley. First time we didn't stay because we didn't like the look of the rooms. A recommendation from someone at Skyland in Virginia got us here as the new rooms opened. They are beautifully furnished and we enjoyed our stay even with the expected ongoing construction. The restaurant has a really good view of the valley and the food is good but not to die for. One of the servers was really attentive but another one was not so I guess that rates service as "patchy". Front desk staff very helpful. The pool and hot tub were good and it was good to see that they pay attention to who is using the pool. The new rooms are excellent although they should have paid a little more attention to the sound proofing. I think this will be a really good place once the bugs are ironed out. As we expected the bugs I think I have to rate this stay as excellent.

Canaan Valley is breathtakingly beautiful! The WV State Park system has provided for very nice accommodations for travelers. This Lodge is newly renovated and quite nice. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, although the walls should have been better insulated for sound. The indoor salt water pool and hot tub are terrific; there is also a work-out room and sauna available. The dining room is large with beautiful view, the food is ok; there is also a lounge with fireplace for lighter eats. It appears the skiing area is great, they were making snow on top of the fallen snow on the slopes and tubing slope. There is also ice skating and cross country skiing available. This is a beautiful area and wonderful place for families. Our room on the valley view side had a gorgeous view. There are also cabins available which look very nice too. We will go back again in the summer to hike.

Room Tip: Rooms on the valley side have great views and beautiful morning light.
