“The essence of Southern hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2011

After a social experiment malfunctioned and a trip to Huntington to see friends was rendered pointless I found myself with ten days to spend in Charleston. I booked into the Brass Pineapple for five nights , initially, and wound up staying for all nine. The owners made me immediately welcome. I felt at ease and, as is the point with a Bed and Breakfast, at home. The place is a condensation of the best experiences of a handful of well-travelled folk who have distilled their knowledge into a well-maintained house with immaculate attention to detail. Warm, well-informed and passionate about providing honest hospitality, they extend their welcome like trusting relatives one hasn't seen for far too long. The food, in particular, is excellently sourced and well-crafted fare, placing importance on using the best of what is available in the region, made with modesty and skill. The cakes are worth a visit alone. It was very hard to leave.

Room Tip: Base you room choice on bathing agility.

Never stayed in a B&B before. We loved it. The owner was great, clean rooms, great breakfast. We have booked our weeding to be held here. Right by the state capital but quiet neighborhood.

Over a 100 year old house perfectly kept with a great staff and owner, great experience, only a 5 minute car drive from all the attractions downtown. Excellent breakfast, clean rooms, great overall experience!

I stayed at the Brass Pineapple several years ago when I was in Charleston for work and I loved it so much that when I returned to Charleston recently for vacation, I decided to stay there again. I found the place much changed, and not for the better.
On the positive side, the common areas are beautiful, with gorgeous oak doors and paneling. The cheese plate, beverages and deserts out in the late afternoon are a real plus. The dining area is lovely, although the lace tablecloth was worn clear through in a number of big patches. The breakfast was fine. However, one morning my place mat had crumbs on it.
The Hearts and Flowers Suite was dark. The curtains are not designed to open, so I had to wind the cords around the curtains and drape them over chairs to get outside light and air into the room. There was a quiet floor fan, which I appreciated, and I kept it on the whole time. There is also an AC unit and I kept the fan on that, also. The lighting isn’t adequate and the room was dark at night, as well.
The armoire was musty, but there was another place to hang clothes and so I used that.
The bed and pillows are extremely soft. Personally, I was quite comfortable, but if you need a firm mattress, this would not work for you. The beds were remade and towels refreshed every day, which is something that you don’t often see in B&Bs for short stays.
The desk is too small to work at comfortably; you can’t even push your chair in under it.
The worst of all: the lack of maintenance to the room was appalling. Providing bathrobes in a B&B conveys elegance. But these bathrobes were worn thin in places and the belts completely frayed, so what is the point? The bathroom sink was cracked. There were water stains and bubbles on the ceiling and walls, peeling wallpaper, and holes in the skirt at the sink in the bathroom. The bedroom ceiling was covered with patches of paint, like you would see when a room is primed before it’s painted. The amenities were a hodgepodge of different brands. In and of itself, that wouldn’t seem like a big deal, but taken with everything else, it reflects a general lack of care that I wouldn’t expect in a low-priced hotel, let alone a mid-range B&B. The room did appear very clean, but given the lack of upkeep, I had to wonder how clean it really was. I did not feel like the owners cared about having the place be nice for guests.

Great hostess looks after all your needs. We were welcomed along with our Standard Poodle. Nicely appointed, comfortable, clean rooms. Within walking distance of the capitol building and very nice restaurants. Enjoyed evening happy hour and home made hot breakfast with the other guests. Would definitely return.

I had a wonderful weekend stay at the Brass Pineapple with friends. My room was very cozy and unique (claw foot tub in room), the front porch was relaxing, the food was delicous, with lots of attention to detail (cinnamon sticks provided for tea). Great location near the capitol building and restaurants. I would definitely stay there again.

I met friends for a weekend stay at this bed and breakfast. The breakfast was delicious, the room cozy and comfortable (I stayed in the English Gentleman), and the surrounding area very charming. Sitting on the front porch for a morning cup of coffee in the quiet, pleasant surrounding was wonderful. There is a nearby running/walking path along the river, and shopping and dining were very close by.
