“Not up to Marriott Standards”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2009

We stayed in the Charleston, WV Residence Inn on our way back to Ohio from South Carolina. Since we are very particular about hotels, even for a one night stay, I selected the Residence Inn based on the Marriott reputation and our experince with Marriott properties. Unfortunately, the Charleston, WV Residence Inn falls well below the standards we have come to expect from Marriott.

The customer service at this hotel is excellent. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We checked in easily to our one bedroom suite. The complimentary breakfast was good.

Mostly due to the lack of cleanliness, we will not return to the hotel. On the surface, the room looked fine. Upon closer inspection though, we found small bugs in the kitchen, a dirty refridgerator, microwave and toaster. The bathroom, bedroom and living room were clean.

Also, the suite needed upgrading. The TVs were the old big bulky style. They were also small, maybe 19 inches. The cook top in the kitchen was a two burner coil style. There was no oven. The upholstered furniture needed to be replaced. They furniture clearly had been covered with slip covers.

Finally, the walls are quite thin. My daughter had a hard time falling asleep due to the noice from other suites. The place smells like dog. I think a lot of pets have stayed there in the past.

We stayed for several days in a two bedroom suite at the Residence Inn in Cincinnati and were very pleased with that property. I don't understand why there is such variation in quality.

It seems like every hotel with a continental breakfast is just filled with children spilling their food. This one seems no exception. As a long-term hotel, it's awesome. It has food every night - bbqs and baked potato bars. How fantastic if you don't want to eat out or cook.

The rooms are very nice here. And the staff seems wonderful. But our room smelled of garlic from the last occupant. Gross. Plus, it's really kinda far from everything - I'm going to try downtown next stay. I liked it well enough, but not enough to find any loyalty in my heart.

I chose the Residence Inn due to the Embassy Suites in downtown Charleston was booked. Even though I had never stayed at any hotel that wasn’t downtown, I decided to give this one a try since I was flying out of Yeager Airport to begin with. Although the Residence Inn was nice, it did not meet my expectations. I did not feel that this hotel emphasized enough on cleanliness. In my suite, the trash bin in the kitchen was left full, there were apparent beverage rings on the night stand in one bedroom, and the toilet was left dirty in one bathroom. I feel that these problems should have never occurred in a hotel chain as respected as Marriott.

Though not a resort or high-end hotel, it's very comfortable, well-kept, and clean. The free breakfast was very good. We'd highly recommend it for a Charleston stayover. One bit of advice... If you're looking for places to dine out around Charleston, stay away from the Charleston Town Center Mall food court. The food at every vendor looked absolutely disgusting.

An excellent hotel, with nice rooms and superb breakfast.

Nice location and friendly staff.

Only problem is thin walls, some broken items (such as curtains) and noisy guests. Also hot tub not working, and front desk understaffed.

Also: no king-size beds available at all.

We stayed here recently while visiting my sister who lives in Charleston. In addition, we have stayed at this hotel EVERY Thanksgiving for at least the past five years--perhaps longer.

This is among the nicest hotels I've stayed in anywhere in the world.

They keep the place spotlessly clean. The rooms are spacious. The staff is friendly.

The breakfast (included) is a true full breakfast--not the "contintental" thing (cold cereal and stale danishes) that you get elsewhere. Instead, you get at least two or three choices of hot entree (e.g scrambled eggs or omelets, pancakes, french toast, home friends, etc. --- exact menu depends on the day).

I can state that every one of these aspects of the hotel has been consistently excellent over a period of several years, suggesting excellent management.

We stayed here while returning by car from the Outer Banks. The hotel seemed fairly new and was reasonably well kept. We were originally given a room overlooking the pool, which was busy with a number of guests so it was noisy. When we realized this, we went back and asked to be moved to a room on the other side of the building. They were very accommodating and pleasant. The free Sunday paper at breakfast was a nice touch.

Most of our issues were relatively minor, but after a very tiring day of driving they added up. The queen bed was not comfortable, more foamlike than springs. There were no linens in the room for the sofabed. The front desk clerk said she would bring them up, we waited 30 minutes, then went down to the front desk to get them ourselves.

There was no wastebasket in the bathroom or near the desk, in fact we searched all over the entire suite before we could find even one (it was hidden in the cabinet under the kitchenette sink). No drinking cups in the bathroom, we had to use a coffee mug.

The breakfast buffet was actually quite good, but there were strange annoyances like no toaster, no regular milk for coffee unless you opened an individual carton, and a juice dispenser where the spout was hidden so you had to guess where to hold your cup (or get your hand wet). These are everyday things that it should not be hard to stay on top of.
