We were reading the reviews just like you, I was nervous, frankly. I booked this hotel because we were driving to DC and this hotel was almost perfectly in the middle, a perfect distance to stop. At the time of booking, this hotel was number one in Charleston, yet there were still questionable reviews about it. We arrived for our first night and walked into a perfectly accommodating room with all the amenities that an overnight traveler needs. The room was flawless, comfortable and welcoming. Mini fridge, microwave, good internet and a roomy and current stand-up shower. The shower and toilet areas are separate from the sink area, which helps when my family of three is getting ready in the morning. The beds were fresh and clean and the flat screen was nice. We enjoyed our night.
Now, on to breakfast....
I read several reviews about breakfast that had me scared. "Typical hotel fare", "Breakfast was horrible", "Not enough food"....and on and on.... NOT TRUE!!! This hotel has: grits, oatmeal, two types of cereal, breads, waffles, danishes, hard boiled eggs, yogurts, biscuits, warm gravy, eggs for biscuits, sausage patties, sausage links, fresh fruit, pineapple chunks, 3 kinds of juice, iced tea, hot tea, coffee of course, milk and muffins. What else do you need? The food seemed fresh to me, I left the breakfast full each time and my family felt the same way. The hostess was also very nice.
So, in a nutshell, this hotel is up-to-date, nice staff and you won't regret your stay, unless you are a pretentious nitwit!!! :-)
