A colleague booked the Best Western for us for a conference held in Charleston. After reading reviews here, I was concerned about the condition of the hotel, cleanliness, and safety of parking. My philosophy is, 'when in doubt, go directly to the source.'
I called the prior to our arrival and spoke with Jesse (Jessica?) regarding the reviews I read here on Trip Advisor. I began with the cleanliness issue. As it happened, Jesse had been promoted from housekeeping to the front desk. She shared with me the fact that they had some problems with housekeeping in the recent past; they couldn't seem to find reliable employees and were frequently short-staffed. Jesse assured me that they were now fully staffed and had a good team on board. (Our designated housekeeper was actually training a new employee while we were there.)
I next addressed the condition of the hotel and the ability to get things fixed if broken (citing the 'closet door' review.) I went on to share that the review cited that there was no manager on duty nor would anyone take charge of the situation per the reviewer. Jesse assured me that, if something were broken and unable to be fixed in a timely fashion, we would be offered another room if available. She also advised that there would always be someone who would take care of a problem if we had one and it would be resolved to the best of that person's ability. There is not a manager on duty 24-hours per day but the manager would work with us when he was in.
Feeling better about the property, we checked in a night early and were given the only room available: non-smoking on a "pet friendly" floor. The room was pretty clean and had no odor, pet or otherwise. Being the picky person I am, I did clean everything off (from light switches and door handles to phones and the remote) as soon as we got into the room. I did my bedbug check and found that the areas between the beds were clean and free of evidence of bugs. The only critique I have regarding cleanliness is that I wet a couple of kleenex and cleaned in the corners and along the base of the outside of the tub. This area (not reachable with a mop) was not clean. Otherwise, the room was clean.
The beds were comfortable, the bath fixtures worked well and drained properly. The television stand is odd- the angles we could turn the TV were not so great but we weren't there to watch TV, so it was a minor annoyance. The temperature control worked wonderfully and kept the room comfortable. There is a refrigerator in the room - we found ours unplugged (most likely by another guest because it was somewhat noisy) but we plugged it in and it was really a nice convenience. I did notice that a smoke smell came through the bathroom vent from a smoking room, so we sprayed air freshener in it. There was also no active exhaust fan in the bathroom- unfortunately common but always annoying. Lastly, I tried to make an outgoing phone call and could not get the phone to work. The front desk said that they were having phone problems and, after trying another suggested route, they stated that the phone in our room was not working. We used our cell phones but I do expect the phone to work when I am paying for a room. All in all, the room was fine and we opted to stay in the room the whole time instead of moving.
As the hotel was full (as was the neighboring Fairfield Inn with whom they share parking), parking was an absolute NIGHTMARE. We got someplace to park each night but never in the lot behind the Best Western. I wanted to make sure that the car wasn't in the far back because there is a homeless shelter 1/2 of a block behind the hotel and didn't want the car broken into. There were a couple of straight trucks that would parallel park closer to the hotels, taking up 4-6 vertical parking spaces which was VERY annoying. On the good side, there were security guards in the lots and they were actively patrolling them. We got in late at night and were approached by one the first night who was very helpful and nice. Another night, another security guard gave us permission to park in an odd place and made sure the car was safely in its' space. Even though it was a pain to park, I feel it is very safe and the guards get an A+.
In summary, here's the good and the bad:
GOOD- Rooms clean, nice people, good security, better than average breakfast, refrigerator in room, outlets on lamp bases, comfortable, central location.
NEGATIVE- Lousy parking, phone didn't work, slow elevator, poor bathroom ventilation, dim lighting as they use all CFLs in the room, unfriendly viewing angles for television.
CONCLUSION- Yes, I'd stay here again but I think there may be better choices at this price point in Charleston.
If you're concerned about your car, make sure you have a parking lot view. Do be aware that if...
