“Worth a Quick Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

We had some unplanned free time in our schedule and decided to make a quick visit to see the capitol. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was and were very glad we took the time. It is the most beautiful capitol building I've visited. It reminds me very much of a large basilica church with the inside of the dome looking every bit like a cathedral. It seems like almost everything is whitish-gray marble: floors, walls, pillars. A large circular cut-out in the center main floor, with the outside circle supported by columns, allows you to look at two floor levels at once and really opens up the space. I love the design.

A wonderful copper statue of Abraham Lincoln stands out front (he proclaimed West Virginia a state in 1863) with the beautiful gold and black dome as a backdrop. The large Elk River flows by, just across the street. On the back-end, a replica of the Liberty Bell adds a nice touch and not too far distant is a great circular war memorial with statues remembering WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

We did not see inside any of the chambers of the capitol, but our quick visit was amply rewarded by what we did see. I highly recommend a visit.

“So much marble!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

What a beautiful place to visit. We walked right in and there was a person at the desk who offered us a map. We enjoyed the videos which helped explain the history of the building as well. The building had so much marble. It was on the walls, the floors and even some of the hand rails. There was an 8' crystal chandelier in the middle under the dome and the place was huge. Very impressive. They also mentioned there was a free museum in one of the other buildings. We went there and were very pleasantly surprised by the size of the collection and variety. Definitely a must go if you are visiting the area.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

Very beautiful building. took a tour. unfortunately the Senate Chamber was being remodeled and the House Chamber was occupied by a group so was unable to enter those portions of the building. Tour guide was friendly and informative of the historical aspects of the Capitol. Very beautiful building!

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

The capitol is beautiful. Inside and out. Inside you can read the history and see the bear and giant chandelier in the dome. I have never done a guided tour, but I hear they have them. Do be sure to have change to pay the meter outside!
