“Marriott loyalists; be careful here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2008

This is a well maintained hotel with comfortable beds. However, for people used to Marriotts, things don't work as well as expected.
After making the reservation online, we called to ask if the concierge lounge would be open for breakfast during the weekend of July 4th. We were told that the concierge lounge was closed so no breakfast would be served there. Also, unlike other Marriotts, there were no complimentary coupons for breakfast in the dining room to compensate for this. Therefore, we booked a room with a breakfast package which cost $10 extra per night. When we got to the hotel, we learned after checking in that complimentary coupons would have been available if we hadn't booked the breakfast package.
We did get complimentary wine and cheese delivered to our room at the time requested. However, even though there were 2 guests registered in the room, we were only given one wine glass. While sipping our wine and eating the cheese, we realized we hadn't been given the Visa gift certificate we were supposed to receive at check-in for using our Visa card to book the room. When we went down to the front desk to request this certificate, it was promptly given to us. There were a couple other examples where things did not work as smoothly as at most Marriotts.
A real bright spot of this hotel is the restaurant, Whitewater Grille. The waitresses and dining room manager made us feel very welcome and provided excellent service. The food was good.
The problem with the long elevator waits, as mentioned in other reviews, still exist. Also, make sure you take a room key when you leave the hotel to be able to exit the parking garage without being charged again. You then give your key to the parking cashier.

I really loved this hotel. It was easy to get to from the freeway. The hotel was very modern and clean. Unlike the previous review, I thought the staff was very nice. The only thing that I really didn't like is the $8 for parking. No big deal thought. I would definately stay there again.

I stayed at the Marriott for a business trip. The hotel is nice, but the staff seemed to take themselves a little too seriously. I also thought it was odd that they charged me $12 to use the internet in my room. Overall a nice hotel, but staff kinda grouchy.

During a long drive in a mini van with three kids; grandma, myself and husband we stayed at the Charleston, WV Marriott as a half way point in our drive. We all enjoyed our visit and were re-charged ready for the rest of our drive. First, it is easy to get to and from the expressway. The hotel staff is very professional and attentive. Everything was spotlessly clean. The kids loved that the pool stayed open until 10 pm. The pool and the hot tub were a nice break after a long drive. They also have a nice excercise room that is open 24 hours. Since there were six of us we opted for adjoining rooms - one with two queens; the other with a king and pull down murphy bed. Personally, I think the beds were the best part - so comfortable - down quilt; good sheet thread count; just lovely really and felt like a cloud. Loved it. The lotion and shampoo were a step above typical too. Our kids loved the hotel. Our second grader is now hooked on the idea of a nice downtown hotel and very let down by other road side motels during the rest of our trip. We will definately return here. We did not do the breakfast so I can't speak of the food. It was a nice touch as we were leaving they had chilled water with oranges. A sip of some of that and a plesant smile from the desk clerk is a nice way to start anyone's days. We all agreed it was a great stop to help our long drive be managable.

Nice hotel located right off the interstate in the heart of downtown. Staff was nice. Room was nice, big, and with a comfortable bed. The breakfast buffet is good and reasonably priced. Vending machines by the ice machines on each floor. The elevators were incredibly slow and only 3 for a 350 room hotel was the only frustrating part of the stay - that and the fact that the second day only 2 were operational.

First, the good - This hotel is very conveniently located, particularly if you have an event at the Civic Center or other downtown location or are interested in Mall shopping. There is a walkway to the Mall. Parking does cost $6 per day and there is no way around that. The rooms are adequate and clean, but not spacious or luxurious. The bedding, however, is top notch. I have traveled quite a bit and this was the most comfortable bed, bar none, that I have ever slept in. The exercise facilities are great, all machines working and very state of the art. Your room key will give you 24 hour access. The elevators were working fine but it was a crowded weekend so they were a little slow at times. Staff were friendly and helpful for the most part. Now for the not-so-great - The trains are noisy and run all night long, as does the elevator - bing, bong, all night long. The pool and hot tub are nice and very warm but way too crowded on the weekends when the hotel is full. Much less crowded in the morning. Beware of the "kids eat free" trap. It means breakfast the next morning at the buffet, which is free anyway. Not lunch, not dinner. The pay per view was outrageously priced - $13.99 for an in room movie! Maybe if it were more reasonably priced, people would actually purchase it. The parking thing was a little strange to me. You needed to turn in a white ticket from the parking garage for your "parking pass". However, your room key was supposed to be your parking pass. But, when we checked out, we were told to leave the room keys in the room, which we did. Then the parking attendant asked for them. Naturally we did not have them and I don't see where it really even mattered since the parking fee had been charged to our room. We then had to produce the bill proving that we had paid the parking fee. Very confusing and unnecessary in my opinion and why call it a "parking pass" if you are charging for parking? There are no vending machines, only a gift shop where you can buy snacks, which were, for the most part, reasonably priced all things considered. All in all, this is a clean and convenient place to stay, not really grand or elegant like you might expect for the price. the staff won't offer a lot of advice so if you need to know something or aren't sure, speak up and ask. Not a bad place to stay, but not as nice as I was expecting.

Clean, large, comfortable rooms; excellent downtown location near convention center and mall, with lots of dining options nearby; modern facility. This is about as nice a place as you'll find in Charleston.
