“Wonderful Getaway in a Peaceful Setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

My husband and I enjoyed a one night stay last week in the Hawthorne House which is located 2 miles down the road from the main house of the Inn. We had stayed once previously in a suite located directly behind the main house. The Hawthorne house is just gorgeous- a beautifully restord historic home in a beautiful setting. We were the only guests the night we stayed and had the entire home to ourselves. We enjoyed sitting on the covered porch with a glass of wine in the evening. The South suite was beautifully furnished with a very nice bathroom. We would definitely stay in a suite at the Hawthorne House again.

We had a scrumptious 5 course dinner, Every course was just amazing. After our meal, we got a chance to speak personally with the chef about how he prepared our dinner. The service was just wonderful. We had a delicious breakfast the next morning, before departing.

Enjoyed a great massage at the spa the day of our arrival. The spa is small, but very quaint. I was welcomed warmly by my massage therapist and enjoyed a relaxing 60 minute massage.
Can't wait to return again. A great escape from the everyday hustle and bustle!

We stayed here for our anniversary and had a lovely time. The rooms are super charming and clean, and the lodge and grounds beautiful. A nice location for a romantic weekend. The prices were a bit steep, and the five course dinner was less than thrilling...not worth the money. Breakfast was average, although the whole wheat biscuit was excellent. Over reliance on scrambled eggs. Service was excellent (reception) to very good (restaurant). We enjoyed a couples massage which was mediocre.

Room Tip: We loved Locke's Nest and enjoyed being in the main lodge.

Hillbrook Inn is a wonderful little getaway spot, perfect for a romantic weekend. The grounds are quiet and lovely, full of mature trees and places to stroll. The Inn itself really is meticulously maintained, not a speck of dust to be found. Everything was updated and modern in the room we were in, but still with the quaint historic touches. Every care is taken to think of anything that may be needed...music playing in the room upon checkin, an ipad for use in each room, bottled water, a Keurig coffee maker. The ONLY complaint I have is that the wall air conditioner in the room was so loud that it was very, very distracting from the peacefulness of the setting and made for a restless night of sleep for me. Kind of like sleeping next to a train track. But the bed, pillows and bedding were high quality and very comfortable. The food was fabulous. We had the 5-course dinner and the 2-course breakfast and I have no complaints. The wine pairing with dinner is a great value if you're up for drinking 3 full glasses of wine plus a small glass of dessert wine. All the staff from the time of reservation until checkout was fabulous. Overall, I would highly recommend the Hillbrook Inn, it was wonderful.

Thank you for writing a review and sharing all the aspects of Hillbrook Inn that made your stay so enjoyable. You are correct in saying that it's the perfect place for a romantic weekend, which is exactly what we strive to create, from the rooms and the grounds to our exquisite meals.

Next time you come to visit, you may want to consider staying in one of our Cottage suites that has central air, or another time of year when the Main House does not require cooling. We hope to see you again in the near future!

Sincerely,

We went for a night to get away from the daily grind. The grounds are beautiful! Play a game of chess right next to a creek. Go on a walk! Swing on the backyard swing. Go to the spa!

We took advantage of the 5 course meal that was just perfection. Highly recommended!

We stayed in the main house in the Lookout! The room was so cute and we loved everything about it. The claw foot tub was perfect for a relaxing bath. We aren't coffee drinkers but it was really nice that there was a Keurig available in the room. The iPad was a great addition but we were taking this night away to get away from technology. So we put away our phones for the night and took advantage of the board games we found in the library.

All in all it was a very nice time.

My wife and I stayed here for our 25th anniversary. It was the perfect choice. The property is quiet, classy, and very restful. We combined our visit with a tour of nearby Harper's Ferry (about 20 minutes down the road). It made for a very fun and relaxed weekend. The staff made us feel right at home. The property itself is historic, dating back to early ownership by George Washington's brother Charles, who used it as a hunting lodge. The current main house was built in the early 20th century, and was modeled after a French country villa. We stayed in the Spring Cottage, easy walking distance from the main house. We enjoyed it very much, but I'd be tempted to try a room in the main house or Gate house next time, just for variety. We opted for the three course dinner at the 6pm seating, and enjoyed it very much. I think the later 5-course option would have been too much. The dinner is prepared specially for you by the chef -- no menu, just your delicious and elegantly prepared meal delivered to your table in the dining room (we asked for a table in the dining room (original hunting lodge room) versus the sun room, which was a little noisier. The staff was very accommodating to our food restrictions, and both the dinner and breakfast the next morning were delightful and delicious.
This is not a cheap weekend, but it is definitely worth the money and you will enjoy the first class service and professional attention. We will return!

Room Tip: In the winter, I would choose a room in the main house, to avoid walking or driving to the dining ro...

Hillbrook Inn is a small resort with excellent service, delicious 2-courses breakfasts, beautiful grounds and pretty, romantic rooms. A cottage building is divided into 4 quadrants, each labeled a season: Summer Cottage, Fall Cottage, etc. We stayed in the Summer Cottage, which was delightful. It faces a pea gravel parking area where we left our car with bikes on the rack and wanted to be able to keep an eye on them. I think the Winter Cottage, which faces the park-like grounds and main building offers the best views and most privacy. But we were totally happy where we were. We had the choice of eating in the Inn's dining room or going to town for dinner. The first night we didn't book for dinner in the Inn as they have a set menu and set time to serve and we were afraid if we were held up on the road we wouldn't make it. But we had a fabulous 5-course dinner the second night. The optional (at additional cost) wine pairings were 4 wines for $29 per person and well worth it. Alternatively, wines could be ordered by the bottle from the wine list.
I highly recommend the Hillbrook Inn and I definitely recommend at least one evening in their dining room.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for her birthday and it was perfect! We were granted an early check-in, which was very appreciated after a long day of hiking, and were immediately greeted with smiles and a welcome Bellini (yum!). We got a very nice tour of the main house, but I had to rush off for my 30 minute back and shoulder massage.

Honestly, I could have taken or left the massage. The staff was very helpful in accommodating my last minute phone calls to schedule it but if you are going to do the massage spring for the hour or longer. It was just a tease.

We stayed in the Spring Cottage and it was just perfect! Working fireplace, beautiful Jacuzzi tub, and a warm cottage-y feel. I sprung for the champagne in room as well which was very nice!

We attended the 3 course dinner that night. We had a small beet salad, which was just ok, a delicious New York strip steak with potatoes and a parsnip puree, which was interesting and yummy, and a berry panna cotta for dessert, which was DELICIOUS!

Breakfast the next morning was also phenomenal and very very filling! A fruit and yogurt parfait followed by a poached egg, potatoes and andoullie sausage. One of those would have been just fine for me, but I wouldn't say no to 2!

The grounds, the customer service, the cottage, the food, all of it was great! I would HIGHLY recommend a visit here! It was a very much needed escape from our city life!

Room Tip: The cottages are wonderful!
