“BEAUTIFUL HISTORIAL HOME”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2011

Just got back from trip to Virginia. After reading the reviews from previous guests, all we can say is the same thing about the Carriage House. It is everything that was said on previous reviews. The house is beautiful and the owners are super nice. The rooms are spacious, well kept, and very clean. Also this house is very historial and the owners make the stay even more enjoyable.

Each year my husband and I spend a weekend away to celebrate our anniversary. We always stay in a B&B and we take turns planning the trips (and it's always a surprise to the other person.) This year was my turn to plan and I wanted to visit Harpers Ferry, West Virginia because it's one of my favorite places and my husband had never been there before. I found The Carriage Inn B&B via an internet search and just fell in love with what I saw on their web site. Once we got there we both fell in love with it. Our stay began with a brief history of the house and tour provided by our wonderful hostess Marie. We stayed in the Mary Rutherford Room, which was absolutely beautiful. The entire house was lovely and well taken care of by owners Donn and Marie. The food was wonderful. Donn and Marie even took extra special care to fix "fake"eggs for my high cholesterol hubby (and they were great!) Each evening when we returned from site seeing or dinner out there was a delicious dessert waiting on the dinning room table. Donn and Marie even kept a small refrigerator on the 2nd floor landing stocked with sodas, juice and water for their guests. (Something we've never encountered at any of the other B&Bs we''ve visited. ) The inn is located on the main road into Charles Town, so it can be a little busy. However, it does quiet down, for the most part, around 10:00 or 11:00 pm. So far, we've stayed at a different B&B each year but I think we'll have to make an exception and re-visit The Carriage Inn.

Don and Marie were wonderful hosts. They were very knowledgeable about the history of the home and the town. They served generous portions for breakfast, which was wonderful. We especially liked the blackberry french toast. The rooms were spacious, clean, and relaxing. There were plenty of things to do within walking distance of the inn. Don and Marie also recommended some wonderful local dining facilities. We had a wonderful stay at the inn and will make it our inn of choice when visiting again.

This is a great B&B, one of the best out there. We were arriving late on Friday night so I called ahead to make sure we could arrange to get the keys. Unlike other B&Bs this was not a problem. Even though we arrived late, just before 10pm, the Innkeepers Donn & Marie were waiting for us on their porch. From the minute we arrived they made us feel at home. Donn gave us the history of the house. He prepares breakfast and asked about any dietary restrictions. Usually you get what the B&B serves and that is it. As a side note he is a GREAT cook. Marie goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need. We had a wonderful experience staying at the Carriage Inn. It was located near everything we wanted to do, which included Harpers Ferry. Great house, great location, great Innkeepers.

We wanted to visit the Antietam National Battlefield Park for the Maryland Symphony Orchestra's "Salute to Independence" and fireworks display over the July 4th weekend, but we didn't look for a place to stay until somewhat late in the game. How lucky for us that the Carriage Inn still had a vacancy! From the time we arrived, it was clear that we were going to make a connection with the innkeepers, Donn & Marie. We have stayed at a number of B&B's over the years, but never have we felt quite so comfortable as we did at The Carriage Inn. Donn & Marie clearly have a knack for showing gracious hospitality to their guests. Here are some examples:
1. We were traveling with bicycles -- with no prompting from us, Donn offered to let us store our bikes and bike rack in his shed. No one has ever made such an offer to us before. On the day that we went riding and returned after midnight with our bikes in tow, the shed key was attached to a note by our door...not something most innkeepers would do.
2. We love staying at B&B's, but we're not real big on the "family breakfast" environment that's foisted upon us in most places. We're pretty private by nature, and we generally prefer to be left to our own at mealtime. Fortunately, our room (The Copper Beech Suite) was equipped with a secluded screened-in porch that was perfect for breakfast "al fresco", which was served promptly and professionally each morning, thereby allowing us to partake in privacy. Additionally, we made some dietary requests that necessitated some menu changes, but there was no indication that this would present any problem for our chef.
3. We're not sloppy guests, so we usually ask just to have our trash emptied and our towels changed during our stay. Some innkeepers have grudgingly granted this privilege, while others haven't granted it at all, but Donn & Marie were extremely flexible and met our request with a smile.

Overall, this was our best B&B experience, and the next time we head to the Charles Town area, we plan to visit The Carriage Inn again -- as long as Donn & Marie are still the innkeepers!

2010: My husband and I spent a long weekend exploring Harper's Ferry and chose the Carriage Inn as our lodging. Don and Marie were superlative hosts. We stayed in the Sunrise Room. It was large, comfortable, and was very nicely decorated. I am a picky eater, and Don made special efforts to be sure that I as well as my husband, ate well and enjoyed our breakfast. We enjoyed learning about the history of the house, the plant life around us and about their own history and how they came to be innkeepers. The price was quite reasonable and the service was excellent. We look forward to staying with them any time we are in the Charles Town area in the future!

We stayed at the Carriage Inn Bed & Breakfast for two nights in April, 2010 in order to attend the $1 million Charles Town Classic horse race. Everything in town was booked and we discovered the Carriage Inn had rooms available. After checking Trip Advisor and reading the glowing reviews we booked a room. We were not disappointed! Donn and Marie, the owners, are truly warm and caring innkeepers. We felt like their family by the time we left. The house (and Charles Town itself) is truly historic, which was wonderful for me as I love history. The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, comfortable and above all - CLEAN. I am a stickler for clean and I couldn't find a speck of dirt no matter how hard I tried. The bathroom was so clean I could have eaten off the floor. I commented on this at breakfast and discovered Donn and Marie do their own cleaning! Not sure how they have time but it shows how much they care about every detail. Breakfast each morning was like eating at a five-star restaurant with fine china and Donn is the most amazing cook! Donn would also provide baked goodies each afternoon. We arrived late on a Friday night and Donn even offered to bring cookies up to us so we wouldn't have to come back downstairs! The Inn is only 3 blocks from the Charles Town Races which was perfect for us, and, all of the chain restaurants, etc. The Inn is right on the main street of Charles Town which puts you within walking distance of numerous historic sights. All in all, do not hesitate to stay at the Carriage Inn, its a wonderful, warm, friendly place to stay.
