“Dirty Carpet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2010

Stayed at the Holiday Inn coming back from Hilton Head. Rooms were okay but the hallways carpet was filthy. Someone ate a brownie or cupcake in the lobby and no one working there noticed and cleaning it up?? The carpet off the elevators and hallways look like they never have been cleaned in years. When checking in a male and female working were looking over a time sheet and did not even acknowlege me for quite some time. The whole area of Beckley needs a face lift. The only way I would recommend this hotel is because the others in Beckley look worse.

This hotel seems very new and was perfectly clean. Holiday Inn's all white bed was very comfortable. Fitness center was just 3 cardio machines. Pool was big and well located. The lobby and service were excellent. The dinning room was very bright with loud individual TV's at each booth. The effect was something like a casino floor or an old-style pin ball machine. Food was heavy and not especially appealing but would be better if taken up to the room. There was a couch and table that would have made in-room dining just fine

This is convenient to the highway. Free parking, free coffee in the lobby, free newspaper.

Extremely thin walls, noisy heating/air systems, next to a truck stop, hard/lumpy beds. Tried 3 different rooms, all the same problems. Could not sleep, and our complaints fell on deaf ears. No return call by manager as promised. Stay anywhere but here if you need sleep.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this hotel. I would rate it a 4 star. The bed linens are very nice and the beds are comfortable. The indoor pool and hot tub look brand new and it was a nice way to spend the evening. We had the breakfast buffet and it was outstanding. I researched all of the hotels at this exit and this one is the best.

This is the best hotel in Beckley, and slight premium price is defintely worth it for me. Very attactive lobby & good services available. I found staff (Bill Huff and others) to be highly attentive, well beyond what you would typically find in this price range. Urban travellers witll find this hotel to be a small island of civilization in an otherwise fairly wild region of the country. I'll stay here on future business trips.

The hotel is very nice and clean. The rooms are nice and big and the bathroom has a door to it. The bed is a little firm. The room seems to be insulted quite well. The heat doesn't come on much. I have very much enjoyed our stay here. I will be staying here again when we come back to Winterplace.

Booked 5 nights for a family ski vacation but left after the first night. Upon arrival, we noticed a trucker stop / rest area located behind the hotel. We should of left then. The hotel is at the corner of a crossroad and a traffic light. You can forget about sleeping when the trucks are roaring by at 2am-5am. The walls of this hotel are paper-thin. It's a wood frame hotel, so you can hear everything upstairs, next door, in the halls, outside, etc. The heating system sounded like an airplane in our room about to take off, and we could hear the heating systems in the rooms all around us that made very loud mechanical droning/humming noises. Even the mini-fridge in our room was noisy and it never got very cold. I found the bed to be quite lumpy too. None of us slept.

To make matters worse, when we got up, there was NO HOT WATER. We tried to call down to the front desk and the phone didn't work! So we had to use our cell phone to call the front desk. They kept telling us the water would be hot soon - "just 20 more minutes". After an hour and a half of no hot water, we decided to check out and go on with our day and try to find another hotel. The last time my husband called the front desk, the clerk said they could give us 1/2 off our nights stay. That seemed somewhat fair. On the way downstairs, a cleaning lady asked us if we were checking out, and we told her we didn't have any hot water and she said "they have a lot of trouble with that". So apparently this is an ongoing problem!
Complaints upon check out to the manager on duty were a waste of time. We were treated very rudely and as if we were trying to scam them. The manager refused to offer us the same compensation as the desk clerk had stated on the phone, and argued with us about everything the entire time.
To make it worse, the day we were forced to check out was my husbands 35th birthday. So the Holiday Inn & Suites in Beckley, sent my entire family and my birthday hubby out into the freezing cold with no showers and no place to stay for the rest of the week.
Needless to say, I am disputing the room charge. Avoid this hotel if you need a good nights sleep and a shower!
