“Great Hotel Great Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

Hotel is modern. Room was spacious, quiet, and clean. Checking-in was a pleasure because of the friendly and professional treatment we received. Close to good resturants and the interstate. The breakfast was wonderful and again the staff provided excellent service. We have stayed here before and will stay again. Perfect stop.

We unexpectedly stayed here on our way back from Myrtle Beach. I was a little skeptical after stopping for lunch in Charlestown, WV. To my suprise the hotel was extremely clean, very helpful and friendly. The beds were excellent and gave you a choice of firm or soft pillows. The rooms had high ceiling, microwave, fridge, flat screen tv and were very spacious. The bathrooms were extremely clean and they gave you soaps from bath & body works. Pool area was nice but shallow. Restaurante was nice and kids 12 and under eat free breakfast, but there are several options right around hotel if you dont want to go there.

We had a hotel room at the competition next door to the Holiday Inn, but had received a voucher for an appetizer at the Holiday Inn. As we hadn't any luck in finding a restaurant that appealed in downtown Beckley, we decided to use the voucher.
Bad choice.
The hotel lobby was very modern and upscale (for a Holiday Inn). Desk staff were cheerful and welcoming.
However, the dining room is not the hotel's best feature. Our clue should have been that the restaurant was completely empty, but for the wait staff. On the plus side I guess, we had our choice of seats.
We ordered chicken wings (how can anyone mess that up?). They did. The wings were breaded and soggy with a not-particularly great Buffalo hot sauce. Tried a couple, left the rest.
Husband ordered the rib eye steak, and I decided to play it safe with the Grilled Vegetable Platter with brown rice.
The steak was actually quite tender and cooked correctly, but had a chemical taste - charcoal starting fluid perhaps? The fries were good.
The Grilled Vegetable Platter had me laughing ... I want to know how any restaurant thinks they can take a bag of frozen mixed vegetables (you know the kind: carrot coins, chunks of cauliflower, soggy slices of yellow squash and zucchini) and magically make them "grilled"?? Tell me - HOW can you do that?? The brown rice was a stoggy mound of goop. It was pretty sad, but the meal had us giggling like a couple of teenagers - after all what can you expect at a Holiday Inn?
The waitress was sweet, although I think our patronage and company was the high point of her evening. She was delighted that we invited her to take our leftovers home to her dog.

We stayed 3 nights here whilst cycling and rafting in the area.

Aesthetically the place looks great but the place is cheaply build and has no sound-proofing whatsoever. We could hear the people in the room next door talking, the kids upstairs charging about like elephants and the road noise comes straight through the closed windows.

One of the main reasons we book this place was down to their website which claimed 'onsite fitness room' and also a 'offsite fitness centre'. The onsite fitness room consisted of a treadmill and a cycle and the staff had no idea what we were talking about when we asked about the offsite facilities. Advertising standards mean nothing to this place.

The room was pretty comfortable and the bed and pillows were very good however the housekeeping leaves something to be desired. The maid could happily leave little notes wishing us a good day but couldn't get round to replenishing coffee facilities providing clean cups or emptying the trash.

The attached 'Kems restaurant' is handy however the food is mediocre, as is the service and the breakfast buffet is pretty dire. So much so that because it took them so long to sort out discrepancies with our final bill on checkout they offered a complimentary breakfast and we made excuses and turned it down.

The manager of this place really needs to get a grip of their staff - either that or the bosses need to get a grip of the manager.

Room Tip: Try the Comfort Inn next door!

Dear AngusDiver,

Thank you for your feedback. We take our guest comments very seriously and always strive to provide comfortable and friendly accommodations. We appreciate your wonderful comment regarding our room and comfortable beds.

However, We’re sorry you received poor service from housekeeping as well the noise during your stay. I assure you the feedback of our hotel will be reviewed and most certainly forwarded to the appropriate departments. We hope you give us a chance in the future to show you how great our hotel is.

Sincerely,

Orlando A.

This is a perfect half way point driving from Buffalo or Toronto. A new hotel. Beautifully appointed. Excellent service. Close to the highway. Couldn't ask for anything more. Lots of places to eat in area.

I stayed in a nearby hotel and walked over to the Kem Restaurant in this newer Holiday Inn. Being in West Virginia I thought a non-chain restaurant might have some regional specialties on the menu. Sadly, no. Food was marginal. Overcooked frozen vegetable medley, disappointing steak. There are lots of chains around that are more dependable quality. If you want more regional food the Tamarak Art center has a restaurant and it's less than a mile away.

Clean, comfortable, new property, just off I-64/77 in midst of Beckley. Friendly service, decent restaurant, comfortable lobby and ample parking. Well located to Tamarack Craft Center and Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine (both of which we highly recommend!). Only downside: They don't include or provide breakfast in the room rate so take care in comparing room rate with say Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express where breakfast is included.
