While the honor of being the best restaurant in Beckley is akin to being the world's fastest tortoise, this is clearly the best restaurant in town, and fills a niche that has been empty since Delightfully Yours closed.
Located on Oakwood Avenue near Colony Drug, a couple of doors down from St. Francis church. Ample off street parking in front, behind, and beside the property.
Located in an old house, with a warm interior and lots of polished wood. A couple of dining areas in front, with a comfortable bar in the rear. In the small dining room to the right of the main entrance, the acoustics are a drawback, as it was very hard for our group to carry on a conversation with only one other party in the room.
Drinks were well prepared. The restaurant carries a wide variety of domestic and imported beers.
We split the hummus and the fried pickle appetizers. The hummus was excellent, while the fried pickles were disappointing.
Three of us had the Cuban pork, and one had the crab cakes. The pork was cooked with plantains, served over black beans and rice. All three of us enjoyed. The crab cakes were pricey, but were all crab, no bread stuffing, and outstanding.
We split the bread pudding, again outstanding.
If you are in the mood for something more than chain restaurant food, Dobra Zupas provides an outstanding alternative to the Char, and I hope this restaurant succeeds.
