Owner description: As the focal points of Beckley’s lovely New River Park, the Exhibition Coal Mine, the Rahall Company Store, Mine Museum and the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia draw thousands of people to the area annually. The unique underground mine, the recreated coal camp, the Youth Museum and the Mountain Homestead are surrounded by inviting lawns, colorful flowers, picnic areas, an imposing coal miner statue and a whimsical 20 ft. “Peace Totem. At the Exhibition Coal Mine, one can ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and tasks of past and present day miners. In addition to the Mine, one can tour the Mine Museum and the period coal camp situated throughout the grounds. Lovingly restored, the Coal Company House, Superintendent’s Home, Pemberton Coal Camp Church, and the Helen Coal Camp School, give visitors a true representation of early 20th century coal camp life. Adjacent to the Exhibition Mine, the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia is open to the public year round. The central exhibit area features an average of three different interactive exhibits yearly. Group tours include a visit to the Museum’s Planetarium. Behind the Museum’s main building, stands the Mountain Homestead. Developed to enrich history studies, guides tell the stirring story West Virginian’s hearty pioneer settlers as they interpret the restored log cabin, one room schoolhouse, barn, weaver’s shed, general store, moonshine still and blacksmith shop.

I have been here several times and always enjoy it. It is quite an experience to say the least. I love that they keep expanding. Anyone that has the chance should go.

“One of our top treats on this trip and well worth it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

You have to go but allow at least 2-3 hours for the tour, museum and out door displays. Wow this is true West Virginia!

“Great underground tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

The underground tour was our highlight mainly because of our excellent guide Mark. He was both fun and educational. We also enjoyed the guide in the family cottage as she was so informative. Some of the other guides could have been better prepared to 'show' their areas.

I am so glad to have embraced the opportunity to see the inter workings of an old style mine. The tour guide was a delightful presenter.

“Really great tour guide, and fun place to learn and stretch your legs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

We had a great time exploring the museum-like coal mining village, and then the mines with a retired coal miner. You could tell the coal miner was really into it, and loved sharing his knowledge. He kept it light and interesting. This was far better than merely a cave tour... way more interesting and certainly authentic to W. Va. Really made us appreciate the coal miners' way of life. It's also a tour that sticks with you. The cost was relatively low for all you got to do. Definitely worth a stop for the whole family.
