As conference coordinator for several events throughout the year, I recommend hotels that are close to the conference sites for participants. I recently arranged a two-day conference in the Tacoma area and recommended participants stay at the Hampton Inn Tacoma Mall.
On the evening before my check-out, I arranged with the front desk for a late checkout as I was storing food in the refrigerator that was for an afternoon break and a reception at the conference. Before leaving for the conference the next morning, I re-confirmed with the front desk the 2:00pm checkout. Thinking I had covered all my bases, I was caught totally by surprise when I returned to the hotel at 1:30pm and found my room had been cleaned and the food in the refrigerator was gone.
I returned to the front desk and the clerk contacted housekeeping to find out why the room was cleaned before my late checkout. After a fifteen minute wait, the clerk and housekeeping supervisor found the three bags of food and returned them to me. Although the housekeeping supervisor assured me none of the bags or containers had been opened, I could no longer ensure the food’s safety since they had been out of my possession. Consequently all the food was discarded and new refreshments hastily purchased.
This mistake on the hotel's part cost me $70 to replace the food and I think it only fair that the hotel either reimburse me or supply a gift card for free lodging. On Sept 17 I received a call from the hotel’s general manager however I was in a meeting and unable to take the call. I returned the call the same day but was told the manager was gone for the day. I called in the AM of Sept 21 and left a voicemail asking for a return call – no response. I called in the PM of Sept 21, confirmed with the front desk the manager was in, and again the call went to voicemail so I left another message asking for a call back – no response. I called again on Sept 23, left a voicemail, and to date have not been contacted.
I coordinate numerous conferences throughout the year for college faculty and Hilton and Hamptons are my first choice for lodging, however, based on my experience at the Tacoma Mall Hampton and the difficulty in reaching the general manager, I will not recommend this facility again for a group stay.
