Beautiful natural area that contains the zoo, garden and historical area. Zoo is a fine small one. Easy access from the park from the bay or the college

“Spacious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

If you like trails, biking or a little drive, the five mile loop is going to be great. Go down to the beaches to stretch your legs or stop at the scenic locations to enjoy the local scenery.

“Deep woods, beach, views, trails, zoo and gardens and accessibility - An Urban Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

Tacoma, WA is a city of 200K located on Puget Sound. Not many cities can boast having as great a gem as we have in Point Defiance Park. On first approach one can appreciate an open area for meeting up with friends for a bike ride, run or walk. There are maintained gardens, a zoo, a beach side smoothly paved walkway that is accessible to the handicapped. A quarter mile later one has the option of deep woods trails with the feel of old growth tree, ferns and moss; or spend a day at the zoo and aquarium. There is a boat launch and boathouse for those who want to try their luck hooking a salmon or cod. How long you choose to spend at Point Defiance depends on your choice of activity: a 40 minute run or a day at the zoo and aquarium.

There is a restored fort that has annual recreation events. There is a specified off leash area for dogs that must otherwise be leashed.

Picnickers can use one of many sites or reserve a covered area. Fire pits are available. Adjacent to the Japanese garden and Koi pond is a "pagoda" that can be reserved for events. There are restaurants, fuel within walking distance.

This is a county park with no permit required. It is well patrolled, so observe the speed limit when driving. The beauty of this park is distracting so, please, be very aware of pedestrians, bicyclists and children at play. The zoo and aquarium have a fee but some days have been free, so refer to their website.
