I'm loyal to SPG, but after finding out Spokane has no SPG properties, I settled for the Ho-In Express, booking it on points for two nights, as room rates were ridiculously high. This was my first ever stay at a InterContinental property.
I arrived two hours prior to check-in, was greeted by a proficient and friendly agent, and I was allocated a room about 30 ft from the front desk in the main hallway that all guests must pass through in order to access the elevators. I expressed my concerns regarding noise and that I HATE ground floors, but they didn't change my room, citing that the hotel was full. It turns out that my concerns regarding noise did not come to fruition, it was a non-issue, and I eventually got over the ground-floor issue. Later in the evening, I called the front desk to see if I could get changed, but their message was the same; they are full (it wasn't some half assed excuse to avoid having to click around), and I was offered a move the next day, provided that I phone in. I didn't like that condition in principal, but really, this is what the Holiday Inn is all about; you pay a little, you get a lot, but not everything. So if you're easy with small things like that, Holiday Inn will be your new best friend. If not, pay the extra $50/night and stay with Hilton.
The room was nothing like the SPG properties, they wern't extravagantly decorated with the nice blinds and roof-mounted halogen reading lights, but they were still modern, functional, and clean. The new beds are in, and although nothing like the Westin Heavenly beds, they're solid, and consistency is a good thing for chain hotels, especially on the bed. The room featured all cable channels, (an empty) mini fridge (capacity 12 beers), microwave, workstation, free wifi, and couch.
The bathroom was like the main room, not very inspiring, but still functional, modern, and clean. The shower head that is installed system-wide looks like a piece, but I'd have to say that it's better than the Westin Heavenly Bath in terms of water pressure and water distribution.
I never checked out the nook for breakfast, but coffee and tv was always on. In the evening, delicious warm cookies and milk were served (although the cups for the milk were urine-sample-sized).
The location is interesting, it's literally on top of a huge rock, so it's nice and easy to spot while driving into town down division st. This leads to a very quiet location, yet directly accessible to the main streets. Although not technically downtown, it's pretty much there; Spokane Arena, Downtown, Riverside Park, and tons of fast food joints are easily walkable.
Service was great, whenever I went in through the front door I would get a greeting. Housekeepers did a good clean up. They were always sure to say hi in the hallways.
I even forgot my digital camera after check out, and called the hotel 1 hour later. The front desk clerk put me on hold, and 3 mins later, told me that she found the camera and asked how I wanted to get it (pickup or mail). This place did not disappoint at all.
This place is extremely well managed, staff morale is high, the product is superb, and the location is great as well. For a first stay with this brand, I was really impressed. This hotel (and I assume all other Holiday Inns) are by no means flashy and won't have the high-end shower toiletries or light fixtures, but they offer significantly greater value than Starwood properties: free breakfast, coffee, wireless internet, and local calls. This simply cannot be had at the Westin, Sheraton, or 4points, and let's face it, 8/10 travelers would rather have a fridge to keep their beer cold and a microwave to nuke some mini-pizzas after a day of work or traveling than a nice-looking lamp. I will be sure to involve Holiday Inn properties in my future travel, and I will definitely use this property whenever I'm back in Spokane.
