“Absolutely fabulous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2008

The Washington Long Beach Peninsula is one of the few classy retreat areas in all of Washington with a vast beach! And this Inn and its restaurant are worldclass. The staff is just wonderful and Innkeeper David cooks a great breakfast right in front of you.

The last time we were at the Shelburn was in 2005. After such a long absence we were pleased to find that nothing had changed. The Inn is still beautifully decorated, the staff is still warm and helpful, and the dining, in both the pub and the restaurant, was memorable. (Have the savory crab cheesecake or the shrimp cakes, or the gnocchi or...)
Our very favorite thing about the Shelburne is the fact that the long-time owners are a part of every aspect of the property. They purchase for their gift "shop", chose the appointments for the rooms, approve the wild mushrooms delivered to their door, and David cooks and hosts each morning's bountiful breakfast. We've been to a lot of B&Bs - a few do as nice a job - no one does it better!

Innkeepers Laurie and David and their staff provide the ultimate country inn experience. We have stayed with them for more than 20 years and have never been disappointed. Many of the guests at the Innkeeper's breakfast (a destination meal) tell us that they, too, are repeat visitors.

Charm and comfortable ambiance to spare!

We stayed one night in the Shelburne Country Inn in April while on a weekend trip to the Long Beach Peninsula. From checkin to checkout the Shelburne was perfect - very personable service, beautiful decor, and a delicious breakfast. We really enjoyed a short chat with the owner, who was engaging without being intrusive. Same goes for the kitchen staff, who were tirelessly friendly and cheerful.

The only possible downsides - the queen bed rooms are very small, though that didn't bother us.

A stay at the Shelburne is the perfect way to add some romance and class to a stay on the Long Beach Peninsula!

We spent two nights in the Shelbourne Inn last week. Their rooms are furnished with wonderful antiques but you are also pampered. The beds are good, the towels are of the softest, plushest Egyptian cotton, there is a lighted makeup mirror in the bathroom, and if your room doesn't have something you need, they'll try to accommodate you. We had a lovely room on the first floor (#16) that opened onto their herb and flower garden. The room was clean and every morning they serve you the BEST country breakfast! David (the owner) has cooked with James Beard and is a truly amazing chef. Each day we had a choice of about 5 entrees - and if he could customize something at your request, he did.

We also dined in the Shoalwater restaurant on the Inn's property which is not under the same management. Unfortunately their food was only good, not great. There were only a few other tables occupied there - all with people staying at the Inn. We had heard that the restaurant had a wonderful wine list but when we tried to order Chateau Margaux which is displayed near the hostess stand, we were told that that bottle was for display only. They do have an extensive wine list, but they are mostly ordinary wines. The next night we went to the 42nd Street Cafe down the street and had a delicious meal - the cook there used to be the cook at the Shoalwater restaurant several years ago. Their wine list focuses on wines for Washington and Oregon. Many of the people dining there were locals so you know it is a good place. You also should try to go to the Ark restaurant which we have heard still has the same wonderful food quality they have had for years.

One of the most amazing things about the Shelbourne Inn is how helpful and accommodating the people who worked the front desk were - they seemed to know everyone on the peninsula and everything that was available to us -- and were extremely helpful with suggestions for things to do, etc. Truly exceptional service!

I selected this inn as the first night on our Oregon Coast trip. It was a delightful escape from a long flight from St. Louis and a 2 hour drive from PDX. We drove along the Washington side of the Columbia River and enjoyed the scenery.

My husband and I explored the Inn and looked at all of the open rooms. They are wonderfully furnished. This is the oldest hotel in Washington, so it does have some age quirks. We liked our room 3, but next time, I will opt for room 4, that has it's own little outdoor deck.

The on premise Shoalwater Restaurant, had the best food, on our entire trip. We had fresh scallops with a japanese hajiki salad that was divine. The scallops melted in your mouth and were the size of silver dollars. The fresh halibut was also excellent.

We had a fresh country breakfast in the morning. One aside, if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs as you are on top of hwy. 101.
