Had dinner with two friends last night. Mostly excellent. Bruchetta appetizer, Pork Osso Bucco, Chicken Piccata, and Beef Medallions, all of which we ate family-style. The bruchetta was nicely presented (think starfish shape) and offered freshly cut tomatoes and basil, and quality mozzarella. The only disappointment was the beef dish (overcooked and a bit tough). But the pork and chicken dishes saved the evening. Both were excellent, with an unexpected executions and presentations. Beyond-decent risotto, as well! Good by-the-glass wine selection.
Dessert was a 50/50 proposition. The tiramisu was excellent (and creatively concocted), but the chocolate cake was not; it had too much of that 'gelled, chocolaty-like substance' masquerading as decadence (think Costco). I was surprised that the obviously-talented kitchen staff didn't slice that layer off and do something creative (as they did with the main courses) with the rest of it, as the cake itself was basically very good, save for the gelatinous coating.
Atmosphere is okay, but doesn't keep pace with the quality of the food. However, they have done a good job of re-defining a pretty crappy place / layout to start with.
In re-reading this, I see that it doesn't come across as overly positive, but I can assure you, I'll be going back. Frequently.
