Had to do a seminar here and I pulled into the Holiday Inn Renton at about 9 PM. The place looked like the typical Holiday Inn property – sad & run down. I was tired and hungry so before I took my bags to my room I walked into the attached restaurant. I was taken to a booth where I found old leatherette seating held together by duct tape. To avoid ruining my clothes with duct tape adhesive I asked for a table and was seated in an aged but clean chair.
I was not in the mood for much so I ordered the soup of the day and a grilled chicken Caesar salad. The soup arrived and hit the spot – couldn’t really say what it was but it was warm and tasted good. The salad arrived next but the meat on the salad, I think it was meat, was not grilled chicken. The warmed sliced ‘meat’ was grey and scary looking. Is this the grilled chicken, I asked? The answer was ‘yes’. I pushed the ‘meat’ aside and enjoyed the croutons and greens.
I started down the hallway with my luggage and was treated to a pungent stink of car freshener. The carpet was so greasy that the hotel had used a gallon of car freshener to hide the real smell.
The room was more than the typical Holiday Inn dump. The corners of the room had not been vacuumed since the turn of the century. The furniture was old, chipped second hand IKEA pieces that been recovered from a land fill in western Alabama.
The bathroom is the real deal – it is indeed a genuine phone booth. You cannot have the door open and use the toilet or use the sink. It is impossible to stand in place and turn around with the door open. Oh I forgot the toilet – it is a second hand toilet that had been purchased from the demolition of a bus terminal.
I got to sleep and woke very hungry. Made it back down to the restaurant for breakfast and was treated to my last Holiday Inn Renton surprise. The buffet chafing dishes were absolutely filthy. I’m thinking maybe the same staff that are in charge of cleaning the carpeting also keep the kitchen, utensils, and serving dishes spic and span. There were greasy finger marks all over the worn out chafing dishes. The eating utensils in the buffet basketsappeared to have been wiped off from the last use but not washed. I’m thinking “how old is my Hepatitis B Vaccine?’ The filth in the buffet area was way too much for me so I left, walked over to filling station, bought a Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich, heated it up in the gas station’s microwave and began my work day.
I read another positive review of this hotel’s cleaning staff. Seriously? The cleaning staff on the floors scream at each other! Picture this: it is 7:55 AM and there are three cleaning staff on the floor pushing their carts down the hall in opposite directions. They are talking to each other and the further apart they get, the louder they talk until finally they are literally yelling at each other. They are yelling so loud you would thing there’s an ice hockey game outside your door. I have never seen this before in my life and I travel 100,000 + miles a year.
One cannot expect much from the Holiday Inns these days but this particular Holiday Inn Renton is seriously in trouble. I am convinced it is only kept open by unscrupulous travel agents who have made a deal with this hotel to bilk unsuspecting tourists seeking a North West experience.
The best part of my stay at the Holiday Inn Renton was the Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich I had at the gas station. Honestly, you would have to work very hard at finding a dumpier dump, a more mismanaged hotel to lay your head down for a night. My advice, save some money and find a cleaner hotel down the street. Any Motel 6 would be a better deal. I am letting the company who booked the seminar never use this hotel again.

A lot to take in and a lot to consider. Yes, we are an older hotel that is in need of a renovation. The Yankee Grill is closed currently and is being completely re-furnished. I guess I should thank you for the kind comments regarding the soup! The Yankee Grill has been around for quite a while and has a strong following. I am sorry that we let you down and caused so much frustration. It would have been nice to speak to you face to face.

The hotel will get its renovation. We do a strong business with many happy travelers and are disappointed that we did not meet your expectations. I appreciate your comments and there are many that are useful and can be followed up on, thank you.
