“Different”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

Okay, we were looking for something different and inexpensive for a single night. That objective was definitely achieved. We did not pre-book, so were able to review the available rooms.

The building is truly fantastic. High ceilings, period furnishings, magnificent central atrium. The rooms vary considerably from smallish shared-bathroom to imperial grandeur with sweeping sea views. We opted for an en suite room (#11) facing Water Street. Good value at around $75 all in.

Forget about luxuries such as an alarm clock, radio, coat hangers, coffee making facilities. There were none. But the bed was comfortable, the shower worked fine, and the street was (relatively) quiet. Everything was clean, though the windows could use a wash.

The pub that used to operate on the ground floor was closed down a couple of years ago.

Room Tip: If you can, get to look around and chose the one you like best. The variations are enormous.

Our blowdryer blew the fuse in the bathroom on our 1st morning & they didn't fix it so we spend all day & the next morning with a bathroom that didn't have any light or power. It was not convenient or ok. They didn't even keep us posted on the status of getting it fixed. When we checked out the lady working apologized, but that was it. Sadly it put a damper on our "girls" trip celebrating our milestone birthday year & 20+ years of friendship.
Other than that, the room was nice. The mattress on the king bed could use a replacement, but we still slept fairly well. The kitchen was nice so we didn't have to eat out every meal. The highlight was the balcony. The view right on the water was amazing. The porch swing was fabulous! Although the dock out back seems to be a teenager hangout, they weren't too bothersome. Once we asked them to stop yelling the f-bomb and miraculously they stopped (or at least we didn't hear it again). Although the building is old, they have taken good care of it & everything was pretty clean.

The ladies at the Info Centre suggested the Waterstreet Hotel when we said that we wanted an inexpensive hotel downtown. They warned us that it was not it is not much to look at on the outside. The reception is a lady in the adjacent gift store who said go have a look at the empty rooms upstairs. There was 4 of us so we had the choice of a large suite or separate rooms. All rooms were clean, charming, high ceilings and original art work hanging (not screwed to the wall). Bathrooms were modern but not fancy. The whole place had a country inn feeling. What really amazed me was how quiet it was. This hotel is right on the water and the Main Street with large single pane windows. There were galeforce winds blowing outside but we heard neither wind nor traffic noise from either of our 2 rooms. We slept soundly. It was truly inexpensive even without the 10% seniors' or BBAA discount. We will definitely return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Go upstairs and pick one.

The Waterstreet Hotel is charming, spotlessly clean, and has the friendliest staff! It was a treat to stay in such a historic place filled with pictures, furniture, and memorabilia from its 100+ year history. We highly recommend it!

i have stayed at the waterstreet on 3 separate occasions. the rooms are very clean and decorated in the 'old style' you would expect from a heritage building. i prefer to book rooms without a washroom...cost less... and the share washrooms are always very clean. note there are about 30 stairs to get to the 1st floor.

My husband and I were just planning on a day trip to Port Townsend when we discovered this fantastic hotel. We went into the store front "just to see" how much the rooms cost, and Mary, the hotel/store proprietor, invited us to take a look upstairs at any of the open rooms and see if we were interested in staying there. All of the rooms were cozy and comfortable-looking, but we were sold on the enormous suite on the third floor. Its high ceilings, enormous windows, clawfoot tub, king-sized bed, and full kitchen made us feel right at home. It also has a deck that runs the entire length of the building where we took in the view of the sound. After we had a full evening drinking and dining along along Water Street, we came back to our room and had the best night's sleep of our entire vacation. I would have loved to have stayed there for longer and could easily imagine the suite accommodating a small family. The place has been restored but not overly so; it still maintains the feel of a Victorian hotel. Plus, it was pretty affordable. We paid around $165 for the night and I know that the smaller rooms go for a lot less. I highly recommend this place for anyone who prefers an authentic Victorian hotel experience over the conveniences of a sterile chain hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in the suite on the third floor, which I believe is one of the largest if not the largest...
