“A surprisingly Good Local Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2011

For those interested in the history of Jefferson County Washington, this place is a must. They have an excellent collection of photos and documents going way back to when Port townsend was a major port, and contender to become the state capitol. Worth a couple of hours of your time.

“A Port Townsend Must”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2011

I always try to gain a better understanding of the places I visit by going to local museums. Though a small town, Port Townsend has a rich and interesting history and that history is well captured in this museum. While there is not a lot to it (we toured it thoroughly in less than an hour) the information provided was diverse and very well done.

“Port Townsend: Now & Then or a insights to a wonderful community”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2011

My Partner and I have been visiting Port Townsend for a few years now and have always loved the sense of community, family and good old neighbourly love that is a big part of this towns culture.

On a rainy day in June we were camping at Fort Townsend and decided we needed a little warm and dry time! so we headed downtown and wondered by the old courthouse. I am not sure why we have never seen the sign before and couldn't resist a quick visit.

To our surprise this place is great! There is a large variety of artifacts, charming video's (that make you envy the people who live in Jefferson County) and nice floor plan that is spread over various levels and time periods. I enjoyed the variety of information from the first nations peoples to the Victorian era as well as information on Port Townsends Chinatown (which no longer exists) I would recommend the historical societys museum to just about anyone, although I would say that wheelchair accessability is at a minimum and may not continue over all levels or to all exhibits. The volunteer we met was friendly helpful and had been a longtime resident of the area... he also pointed out some nice restaurants to dine at!

Tip: This Museum can also be recommended for large groups or for budget travellers as entrance fees were nominal.

“The historical society museum is a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2005

When wandering around this pretty little town you immediately begin to wonder how all of these Victorian buildings came to be in such a remote place (And are still there.). Answers to all questions can be found at the historical society museum. They have wonderful exhibits of artifacts and photographs about the once bustling and rowdy seaport.
