“Clean and well cared for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

We stayed here for a quick overnight trip- walked off the ferry and then a block or two to the hotel. The hotel itself is well kept, with friendly desk staff and reasonable pricing for the off season. The room was clean, with gorgeous high ceilings and expansive windows. We stayed in a second-floor room looking out on a side street. It was a very windy and wet day, and the room was great for watching the storm. It was a perfectly pleasant experience and I highly suggest it.

I did take away a point for sleep quality but that is probably more my fault than the hotel's: my apartment at home is in a moderately busy and noisy part of town, and so the absolute quiet at the hotel was a little difficult.

If you are looking for a short getaway to a 19th Century Victorian, frontier-hotel fantasy, this is it. On the down-side, while it is good value for the budget minded guest, it is just a middling "hotel" experience.

Once a frontier brothel, the hotel has been restored to nearly replicate the original ambiance. A grand stairway adjacent to hotel office and ground-floor parlor takes you to Victorian themed rooms on the second and third floors. Halfway up the staircase from the first floor is a pulpit over-look where you can imagine the resident ladies of the night evaluating their clients. Further up the staircase is the large second-floor Victorian themed parlor, for board games, reading and quiet conversation. Rooms are well appointed in Victorian style, often with separate sitting and sleeping areas (ours also had a kitchen). Double-high ceilings add to the ambiance. Bathrooms, while retaining the overall theme, have modern fixtures. Water pressure is excellent even on the third floor. Room temperature was well-balanced (autumn stay). Flat screen video-monitors in the room and wi-fi access was greatly appreciated. Restaurants and an active bar/night scene are a short walk, while an excellent boutique bakery/coffee bar is "around the corner".. Off-street parking at the rear of the hotel provides good access and perhaps some vehicle security.

The experience can be a lot of fun, but the traveler must honestly ask him or herself "Which is more important to me - the Victorian or hotel experience?": There is no elevator and the double height ceilings make the walk-up, third-floor rooms very distant, particularly when schlepping several bags; Sound carries and is perhaps amplified in the high-ceiling hallway - not a problem this night, but we had quiet neighbors. The mattress in our room ("Miss Lily" - yes, rooms are named, not numbered) was adequate but sagged a small bit towards the middle. The linens were soft not crisp - an issue for us; A folding luggage stand was so low as to be nearly useless, and enough off-theme finishes were present to keep us aware that we were in an imitation not a replication of the period; At a subtle level, the Victorian decor, while elaborately executed, veers towards the garish, rather than elegant, and may get old very quickly for some travelers.

Room Tip: Remember when reserving rooms - no elevator, side and off-street rooms are quieter.

This was such a cool place! If you need all the ammenities of a chain hotel, this place may not be for you. The style is all victorian which fits in perfectly with the whole area. Our room was large and period decorated. The history of this building is facinating and each of the rooms has the name of one of the "girls" who used them. The staff was helpful and gave us good suggestions about places to dine.

Room Tip: Each room is special!

This is a really neat old place, comfortable and clean -not luxury but a unique heritage experience. Generously sized rooms with the highest ceilings you have ever seen. Bed was comfortable -antiques and vintage furnishings - great location, free convenient parking. A great alternative for folks like me who don't really want a B and B and rates competitive. I am usually pretty fussy but had no problems relaxing my expectations a bit to stay somehwere unique with a genuine history and an interesting past. If stairs are an issue you will have to give this one a pass. Place is definitely haunted but not scary! stayed on Halloween and heard some bumps in the night - some kids were exploring the hotel and ghost hunting having a great time.

The Palace is charming and a great deal when using their 2 for the price of 1 night special! A couple girlfriends and I try and go once a year for a fun getaway (and to search for a bit of ghost action) I love all the different rooms and it’s still fun to explore each of them even knowing the property. The rooms with the claw foot tubs are a treat and the rooms with the exposed brick are cool. They are located right down town (across from the water) convenient for shopping, eating and stumbling home after a night of drinking. The front desk and housekeeping are friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: If you have trouble with stairs, choose a room on the first (well, its their second) floor.

We stayed in the Miss Rose room, which had a lovely old-fashioned feel and the most glamorous bathroom we had ever seen! Dark red walls, gilded mirrors, freestanding jacuzzi bath...gorgeous! We loved Port Townsend immediately and were welcomed very warmly at the front desk on arrival at the hotel. Although I can't remember the gent's name, he had a lovely Boston accent and told us plenty about the history of the place, which is fascinating. He also recommended the Silverwater cafe for dinner and it was DELICIOUS! We only wish we could have stayed in PT longer.
one note - Be prepared for pre-dawn foghorns....!

we recently stayed at this wonderful hotel as part of our vacation travelling around washington. What a find! it was brilliant, the rooms are all full of antiques and ours was large, spacious, clean and had lots of character. The staff are really helpful. I agree with the point that the seagulls are very noisy on a morning but you have to remember this is a working port. Loved the history of the place. Fantastic value for money.
