We chose to spend three nights at the MacKaye Harbor Inn. Our hope was to spend our days there hiking and kayaking. Our hosts, Robin and Mike, took every care to insure that our goals were fulfilled. They were eager to share their knowledge of the area, which was a great help. The breakfasts were great, and the rooms were quiet and comfy.
It was a joy for us to discover that Lopez Island is a hidden treasure of quiet serenity, scenic beauty, glorious water all around, and blessed with wonderfully fresh air. Wildlife abounds. We were blessed with great weather, and every aspect of our visit was a treat.
The Inn’s kayaks live right in the front yard, right on the waterfront. Mike enthusiastically set us up, told us about the high points to see, and we paddled off for hours of fun in the harbor on two different days. The water was crystal clear, the bay was calm, and we relaxed and enjoyed the sights. We photographed river otters, great herons, oyster catchers and deer from distances of 20 feet or less as we quietly floated along. What a treat!
For hiking, Mike recommended Iceberg Point State Park, and what a treat it was to walk through pine forests and emerge into beautiful coastal views as we approached the water’s edge. We had two mellow afternoons trekking there, and we had the entire place to ourselves!
We ate dinner twice at the Bay Café, which was superb. We don’t recommend The Galley.
Our plan is to return again next year! Highly recommended.

We have stayed in many B&Bs, but this is the best yet! Robin and Mike are the warmest, most welcoming innkeepers we have met. We felt like they loved having us in their home. The kayaking is amazing with no-fuss rental of singles after Mike's orientation. We had the room with a balcony overlooking the water -- amazing and well worth a few extra dollars! We highly recommend this as a place to stay on Lopez.

Mackaye Harbor Inn has to be the best ever B&B with it's situation right across the road from from the beach/harbour and great hosts Mike and Robin. We spent 3 nights there recently and used their bikes to explore as much of the island as we could. The breakfasts were amazing and our room was perfect with lovely decor and fresh flowers. I hope to return sometime soon.

We had so much fun with Robin and Mike, they looked after us so well.
Every little detail is looked after in the hotel generally and especially in the room in which we stayed. The fresh flowers are abundant.
Breakfast was a delight, delicious and fresh and during the day our needs were met with any request.
We used the free bikes each day to tour the island but found the hills to be much steeper than advertised by the Island tourist bureau. We needed an extra day to hike this gorgeous area.
The restaurants are all situated in Lopez Village, a car is a definite requirement.

Room Tip: There is only one room with 2 beds which we needed, quiet but in the back without a view of the harb...

Go here only if you want gracious beyond compare hosts at the Inn, a sweet location across from a charming cove, bountiful and delicious breakfasts, the chance to see bald eagles, seals, otters, and starfish from kayaks launched right from the beach across the street, and a wonderful refuge. If you want a place that will produce raves, this is it.

I came to Lopez island and the MacKaye Harbor Inn with the thought in mind of demonstrating to my California sister why we Puget Sounders live and love it here… even under our notorious cloud layer. So I picked a place that I thought would be quintessential Pacific Northwest; beautiful water & mountain views, abundant plant & wildlife, and a million things to do outside(without the crowds) in the mild & pleasant summer weather of the Puget Sound. Choosing to stay at Robin’s & Mike’s B&B was the perfect solution to showing an ‘outsider’ all the beautiful & majestic scenery of this area. We spent our mornings paddling across the protected bay in front of the Inn, moving quietly in order to catch a glimpse of the nearby wildlife. We watched eagles watching us from their treetop perches along the shoreline, a resident family of otters sliding down their otter-made slide on the rocks close to shore, and tide-pools of marine life that are, I’m sure, the envy of tide pool enthusiasts anywhere on the planet. We spent the afternoons riding the bikes that the inn offers to different points on the south island that offer awesome views of the water passages, islands and peninsulas around the Puget Sound. This southern part of the island is on the opposite end from the ferry landing, so there is very little traffic while riding bikes down the winding country roads. In fact, it is so quiet here, that most of the time one hears only the sound of the birds and the lapping of the waves on the shoreline during high tide. (It is also considerably sunnier here than the surrounding area due to the rain shadow effect of the nearby Olympic Mountains.)
On top of all that, Robin & Mike are what we all hope for when staying at a B&B; innkeepers who really want to share their piece of paradise with others. They are attentive, friendly and knowledgeable hosts who enjoy seeing you enjoy yourself at their place and on their island. They make every effort to see that their guests are happy, and they have an eye for the small details that make folks comfortable. Add to that hosts who are adept at striking up spontaneous and intriguing conversation…and what more could one ask for? My sister and I were impressed! And I think sis understands now why I live in this area …even with the clouds.
