My sister recommended this place, and it has changed our view of the season. We went in the first week of December - snow and ice everywhere, quiet, even for the weekend, and utterly spellbinding scenery - magic even. They had a "Christmas Carol" play in the chapel, that not only set the mood for the Christmas season, but was a wonderful memory for my children. Many have asked why families with children would want to stay here - simple. For the same reasons adults want to get away. No TV's - for our family, that trancends into no video games, CD's, I-pods, cell phones, pagers, etc. The game room and library are used for what they were intended. Board games and reading. Meals are exceptional, and you talk to each other, instead of at each other- talk and connect your whole visit. A little pricey, but when you consider the value of the meals included, worth every penny. The children have stated that it is our new family tradition, to go every year. And when your children would rather turn in their electronics and friends and trade for time with each other and parents, that is something treasured and special--like magic.

  • Liked — The atmosphere
  • Disliked — We didn't get lunch included too!

My husband had stayed at Sleeping Lady for the WA State Cultural Congress gathering, and he loved the experience so much, he wanted to share it with me. He especially requested a cabin by one of the water features, but when we got there (in Feb.), he realized his mistake. 2 feet of snow covered everything, including the fountain (turned off for the winter)! Oops. I appreciated the thought and let my imagination fill in the ambience.
As we intentionally picked an off-season date with no special events attached, the place was quiet and perfect for our romantic getaway. We enjoyed walking the paths to discover where they led and enjoyed finding so many works of art scattered around the property.
The room was very comfortable and reminded me of a cabin my grandparents owned, so I was enveloped in a sense of "home" throughout our stay. We enjoyed The Grotto bar, sitting in the "cave" section, visiting the library and the cathedral. The food was simply amazing, as many others have stated, but by far, our *favorite* part of the stay was lounging in the hot tub that feels like it was carved out of the side of the mountain. On snowy evenings, we shivered our way up the path to the hot tub, our swimsuits covered by the bathrobes provided and slipped into the steaming water, giggling like children. Getting OUT of the hot tub, hastily donning plush robes and hurrying back to the warm cabin is an adventure in itself.
For us, the fact that the room had NO TV was a plus, and we had brought a book along for the pure purpose of reading to each other. Overall, a truly enjoyable experience! From what others have said, I would recommend going during the off-season and enjoying the property/accommodations the way we did!

  • Liked — The food, the scenery, the sculptures and art, the hot tub
  • Disliked — Nothing

I had heard a lot of good things about this retreat so I booked the Eyrie, which is the most expensive "suite" they offer. Remember that this property prides itself on eco-friendly construction and being part of nature as opposed to the mega resorts that are environments unto themselves. As such, the property has a bit of a "summer camp" feel - some paved pathways but mostly dirt/gravel footpaths, and everything is set in a very beautiful area.

The Eyrie was nice and very spacious, but very basic and was essentially a cottage consisting of one large room - bed at one end and a couple of sitting chairs behind that. You won't find a TV or a lot of "extras" here but it was pleasing to the eye. Our suite had a jacuzzi tub and across the hall in a separate room was the toilet and sink. There was also a sitting area out back which opened into the sleeping area via french doors. Unfortunately, there are quite a few insects in the summer time so we were therefore unable to sleep with the doors open.

We regularly found deer crossing the footpath in front of our cottage but the pool, while beautiful, was overrun with children. In fact, the entire resort was teeming with families and kids, which surprised both of us seeing as we paid almost $400 for our room and most of the others were $300 and up (per night). The library (with one computer available for internet) was nicely appointed with a variety of books to peruse but overall the property was very spartan, which further confused us as to why families with kids would want to stay here.

Far and above, the most redeeming quality of the Sleeping Lady was the food. I don't want to degrade it by saying it was served "cafeteria style" (you slide your tray from one end down to the other and select what dishes you want to eat) because the food is absolutely phenomenal. In fact, I've traveled the world over and this was by far the best food I have ever eaten on site. Not only was it delicious, but it was unique, inspired and was displayed beautifully. While I don't think that the room and retreat were really worth the $400 we paid for the night, the food definitely makes me want to come back for another stay.

I would recommend this property to a friend with the disclaimer that they should expect very spartan/minimalist arrangements.

  • Liked — Very natural, spartan, excellent food
  • Disliked — Overrun with kids, not really worth the money

Very interesting property (worth reading about on their website). Totally gorgeous surroundings, very friendly staff, great and plentiful food. Good pool and outdoor hot tub. The basic rooms are charming and more than adequate if not terribly luxiorious. I consider myself a fairly fussy customer and I would be happy to stay here again. You have no idea that you are anywhere near the over the top and tacky Leavenwoth main drag.

I just spent a weekend at Sleeping Lady where my friends held their wedding. The entire resort was occupied by wedding guests and it was nice to be at one location without having to drive for the whole weekend, but not feel claustrophobic at the same time. It had a rustic feel without being shabby. The room my friend and I shared was nice, with more than enough space for the two of us - a/c, coffee, hairdryer and the works (no tv though - which was fine). The dining faciliity provided great food, the bar/grotto was fun, and the pool was great.
