“Nice Business Club atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2008

Needed a pleasant hotel in a safe location while visiting the area for some business. As a single woman, need to feel secure. This is a spacious, non-congested, quiet, and rather elegant boutique-type hotel. While not as new as other hotels, I found the furniture in the rooms of good taste and classier than other modern cheaply-furnished hotels. The rooms were spacious, and the huge bed very comfortable, a cosy feeling and got a good night's rest.
I was there for 3 nights and found the staff very friendly, kindly, and patient, important for a single woman needing to find her way around. The hotel seems to cater to business customers although there was a family with teenage kids there at that time.
Close to a shopping plaza and nice to walk around, there is a bird sanctuary adjacent to the hotel. Breakfast is continental, but I ordered a hot breakfast daily for extra and it was very good.
From talking to the staff, there has been a recent change in senior management so don't know if previous reviewers got the same staff, but I found them very helpful, and the hotel is good value for a classy business club type hotel. Am planning to return for business and will stay there again.

This is a bizarre hotel and should be avoided except in cases of emergency. There are many problems with it. Previously it was a Clarion that went straight down hill after 9/11 when travel dropped off nationwide. It was sold more than a year ago. For starters, the proprietor is a woman who walks around in her bathrobe berating the staff, which seem to turn over constantly. If you try to get a straight story about the price of the room, she pulls out a laminated chart showing you that your room rate is a bargain because it normally goes for hundreds of dollars (which is absurd and a lie). The rooms can be OK sometimes, but other times there is something wrong, such as the ventilation system or giant wrinkles in the room's carpet. The one good thing about the place is that it is quiet, but that is partly a function of the morgue-like atmosphere. The place seems deserted except for the lobby area. There is a breakfast room, but it is very odd and the free buffet is spartan and sugary. There is a workout room, but there is no equipment of use there. Avoid this place if you can.

Stayed here on business. Everything else in town was booked. After hearing the price over the phone, I decided that the extra dollars would give me a nice place for the night. Unfortunitly, that wasn't completely the case. Entered the lobby on a real hot day and it was not air conditioned (owners trying to save money? poor employees!). The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. I checked in and went to my room only to find the air conditioner had been turned off (saving more money?) and was 90 degrees (actual reading on the controller). Checked out the bed mattress (very important as I have a bad back) which turned out to be either very old or new and cheap. Went to the front desk and requested a different room. I was moved to the only room left available which happen to be an up grade. I can say, that if I had paided the additional amount for this "up grade" I would have been extremely disappointed. The room was clean but little things all over need work, from moldy grout in the shower to stains on the carpeting. The mattress in this room was in the same condition as the first room. The building, grounds, and rooms are in need of some TLC.The breakfast room is very roomy and cute but lacked one thing... decent food. There was only prepackaged muffins, bagels, coffee and juice. Not much considering what most hotels in this price range (and some priced much lower) offer their customers. Overall this hotel was a disappointment. The only conclusions I can make are: 1. the place is up for sale 2. the place is destine for the recking ball or 3. the owners are putting profit above reputation.

After visiting their website, I inquired via email about reservations and rates for a July 2006 stay and never received a response. (It has been about three weeks now.) The website for the Carlton Inn at Totem Lake does not have online reservations. I would recommend that they add online reservations or, at very least, a way to check availability -- especially since their email address is of no use. That, or they should just learn to respond to email inquiries...

Ended up easily booking a nice room for a decent rate in Bothell, which ended up being in closer proximity to the nearby wineries in Woodinville.
