Stopped in AGAIN for take-out for me & the hubby after I got off work and couldn't think of being satisfied by eating anything else. Since they were closing up shortly after, I ended up with a couple free rolls and sides that were otherwise going to be tossed at the end of the day! That was a pleasant surprise I won't count on in the future, but really appreciated helping to stop food waste (and get extra rolls MMMMMmmmm!)
It's slightly pricier than KFC or the grocery store's fried chicken, but I will drive out of my way and pay extra for this stuff because when I get the hankering for fried chicken, only Ezell's recipes seem to fully satisfy.
It's been so long since I had their regular chicken recipe as I always go with the spicy blend, but I remember enjoying the chicken as moist and not too-greasy, only finding the flavor a bit bland. If you want the essential Heaven Sent experience, go with the spicy. It's not super hot, and more of a flavor-full spice with a subtle heat. As stated in other reviews, their rolls are super addictive and deliciously fresh, buttery and fluffy.
My personal preference for sides are the potato salad (mmmmm!) and their sweet corn (buttery and peppery). I'm personally not a fan of their mashed potatoes (dry) and gravy (not bad), but your subjective preference may be different than my own. The sweet potato pie and bread pudding are also scrumptious if you're looking for something sweet that tastes of love.
Do you do gizzards? Call ahead of time to order if you don't want to wait, as those are cooked to order for optimum freshness.
Ok, they can't be that awesome, can they? I'm feeling like I'm painting this picture of a review with rose colored glasses but I'm honestly trying to think of something to criticize... hmmm. Oh! They don't take AMEX, and there's a clear message that proselytizing-christianity-is-business-as-usual which permeates the establishment's uniforms and ad copy.
HELLO! "Heave Sent"!
Even though I don't actually believe in heaven, I do believe Ezell's recipes, quality control and cheerful staff will lighten your mood (even if weighing down your tush) while spoiling your taste-buds. Whether it's Jesus that inspires Ezell and his staff, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I care not: regardless, I can taste the inspiration and passion seasoned through-out.
