“Fabulous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2008

My husband and I stayed at Otter's Pond B&B and were absolutely thrilled with our experience there. The 5 couse gourmet breakfast was delicious, the owners were very accomodating and we loved our room. East Sound had great shops and restaurants! Also, the beaches, starfish and wildlife were spectacular. I cannot wait to visit there again!

If you are headed to Orcas Island in the San Juans, you should stay at Otters Pond. We travel a lot, on business as well as personal trips, and I feel that Otters Pond is among the very best places we have stayed anywhere. Not only did we have a great room, with all the features of a five-star hotel, we had a memorable breakfast every morning! And, whenever we needed local advice, from good hiking trails to kayak adventuring, to the best local restaurants (including reservation service), to short cuts to avoid traffic between Anacortes and I-5, Otters Pond provided it. In short, if you want a combination of concierge, cusine and creature comforts, Otters Pond should be your choice on Orcas Island.

Such high hopes, but they were all dashed. One reviewer mentioned the "cold reception," we got the HUGE list of rules, almost a book. The host was also apparently bent on reading us more rules that weren't in the book. By the time he was done, it felt like we had paid a lot of money to stay in Stalag 17. If you like living in a tightly constricted environment (even for us middle-agers), by all means, check this place out. But if you like at least some freedom, and the feeling that you're on vacation, stay the heck away from this place. The guy was hovering all the time, reminding us constantly of the "book of rules." Felt like a bad "B" movie....

Our goal is to have a place of serenity and tranquility and to provide unobtrusive hospitality. We welcome respectful guests.
This review regrettably represents the misfortune of both innkeepers and this member of a bicycle group in being at the wrong place and setting for their needs. This guest falsely expected to take over the house and to party with the group. They became rude and hostile when we told them that their behavior was unacceptible to us and our other guests. They were disrespectful to us and their loud and boisterous behavior made our other guests uncomfortable. Their visit was in July of 2007.

We read the few negative reviews of Otter's Pond before booking. Since we don't normally walk on carpet with muddy shoes and throw red wine about, we thought we would give this fabulous B&B a try. We found the location, food, hottub and innkeepers delightful. Both Carl and Sue were approachable and very knowledgeable. They had an answer to every question from local activities/food to where to eat in Hawaii. They are well read and traveled and we would encourage inquiry of their experiences.

Coming off of the perfect weekend, there is not much bad to say about our experience at Otter's Pond. With Washington's unpredictable weather, maybe a DVD TV in the room? We can see how some may be turned off by the "rules" others have referred to. But, when you look around the grounds, you see and feel the pride they take in their property. We could certainly sense that a lack of respect might not be well received.

We usually make a point to try somewhere new when we travel, but we will definitely be going back to Otter's Pond.
Thanks Carl and Sue!

We enjoyed our stay at Otters Pond B&B so much that we extended our trip by one more night. The home was beautiful. We took the smallest bedroom to save on our costs, but it was very nice and it had a wonderful view of the pond; it was perfect for us. The location of the house was perfect. It was close to the village square (5-6 min. drive) on the island but far enough away to be quiet and totally natural. It did not have ocean views, but the large pond, the birds and the trees that surrounded the pond made for a very beautiful setting.

The hot tub was good and hot and also had views of the pond and wildlife activity. The owner Carl was careful to take care of our special dietary needs and made us very tasty breakfasts even though it was not what he normally prepared.

There are many nice places to stay on Orcas Island. This was my third stay, and I liked Otters Pond B&B best of all so far.

  • Liked — Views and location close to the village square
  • Disliked — No ocean views (very minor point since natural beauty abounded)

My husband and I needed and escape and WOW! Otters Pond turned out to be the perfect choice! We loved our clean and comfortable room with the very romantic fireplace. The fresh spring tulips which the innkeeper placed in our room reminded us of the beautiful days to come. The inn has a beautiful view of the pond...we watched several eagles and other birds from a telescope that Carl and Sue had placed for the guests to use.

Carl and Sue and the best innkeepers we have ever had. They just seemed to know what we wanted and when. The breakfast was lovingly prepared, all homemade and served on beautiful dishes.

You cannot go wrong with this inn! I look forward to my next visit to this truly exceptional bed and breakfast!

My husband and I stayed at Otters Pond B&B in Oct 2007 and loved it. We stayed in the Goldfinch Room. It is a beautiful room and we really liked that it has a private entrance. It is a very romantic setting, perfect for honeymooners. All creature comforts were available: luxurious bath robes, cd player with a nice selection of relaxing music, and a fireplace. The inn is beautifully kept. The breakfasts were incredible. First class service with dishes tailored for a gourmet palate. It was a wonderful start to our days in the San Juan Islands. This is by far one of the best B&B's out there. It is right on a small pond with a beautiful view and a great place to watch for birds and other wildlife. The grounds are beautifully landscaped creating a very inviting and tranquil get away. It is right before the entrance to the Moran State Park which was great for us because we really enjoyed hiking and the view from the top of the mountain.
