“Heaven on Earth--Otters Pond”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

It gives me great pleasure to review and recommend this elegant and beautiful B&B. Every detail was pristine. The host and hostess,Carl and Sue , made us feel special and cared for in every way. From the lovely gourmet 5-course breakfasts to the silky sheets on the beds,we felt transported. This was such a relaxing experience. We loved watching the wild birds greet us at the pond's edge.We loved the music. We loved the new decor. It was wonderful. We will definitely return next time we need a "get-away" retreat.

Room Tip: Each room has been remodeled. No "bad" choices.

Carl and Sue were very good to us. The house is beautiful and relaxing and the cooking was great. We had met other interesting guests in a nice environment. The B&B is right down teh road from Moran State Park, which is beautiful. Amazing amount of beautiful hiking and mountain biking in the area. Highly recommended. Note, cell phones will not work there, which is a nice break actually.

My wife and I stayed for two nights in mid-March. As a travel agent, I'm pretty careful about what I recommend, but I can indeed recommend this wonderful bed and breakfast. We stayed in the Bluebird room, the only one without an ensuite bath. The bath is just beside the door, and even though the house was full, we never ran into anyone else while using it. Our room was comfortable and serene, overlooking the beautiful pond. We truly enjoyed watching the large variety of birds. Breakfast was suptuous each morning, and the company was good. Sue and Carl are excellent hosts, very pleasant and knowledgable. As world travellers themselves, the fact that they settled in this particular spot, on this pond on this island should give you an idea of the beauty and serenity of it. We'll definitely return.

Room Tip: The rooms on the pond side have a great view. All are nice.

My husband were looking for a long weekend getaway from Texas and Carl and Susan's bed and breakfast was the perfect fit. We stayed in the Swan room...the bed was so comfortable, I almost hated to get up. But of course, one had to get up to enjoy the delicious gourmet breakfast we were served. I especially loved the peppered bacon and the banana/blueberry pancakes...mmmmmm!

Further, since it was a football playoff Sunday, we were able to enjoy the living room/large TV with other guests. Carl...glad to see that the 49'ers won---we didn't think they could pull it off!

We would definitely plan on staying at Otters Pond B&B again..

Carl and Susan are the perfect hosts: friendly, warm, more than knowledgeable about the area, and determined to fill you up with delicious breakfasts!

We stayed in the Goldfinch room – no view of the pond, but we could always sit on the deck and enjoy the view from there. The room was cozy, tastefully furnished, with a comfy bed and a fireplace. The room rate was very good value for the quality of the accommodation and the stay in general. The B&B is also well positioned on the island - not too close to the busy-ness of the town, and not too remote.

We were going to stay for just three nights and spend another three on San Juan or Lopez island, but landed up feeling so relaxed and welcome at Otters Pond, that we spent our entire stay there. Susan succeeded in making each of our six breakfasts different from the last; a yummy medley of fresh fruits, muffins, omelettes, even polenta.

Carl's tips on sunset views, beach walks and birding created some beautiful memories and photographs for us.

Loved the hot tub, especially at night, when the stars were out and the night air was crisp.

We read some reviews about “too many rules”, and it’s true you’re asked to remove your shoes in the house and pay attention to a few other requests, but I can understand why the owners would want to keep their B&B in perfect condition and that didn’t worry us. Most of it is common sense and good manners, anyway.

There was lots of exploring to do on the island and Carl and Susan provided excellent advice on hiking, orcas tours, shopping and restaurants. Some days we would just sit on the deck and watch the birds at the feeder and enjoy the peacefulness of the pond, or sit inside and read in the living room area. No sign of the otters … but that just gives us an excuse to come back and enjoy again!

This is a beautiful B&B. The deck is gorgeous and so is the pond. It was really nice to spend time outside watching all of the birds and looking at the pond and the ducks. The only thing we didn't like were all the rules. When we arrived it was my birthday and I was so tired I just wanted to go to our room. The owners said we had to wait for another guest to arrive so that we could have an orientation. We didn't have to wait very long, but I was still a little annoyed. We also wanted to go in the hot tub one night, but before we could go in one of us had to have an orientation on this as well. The other thing I didn't like were the breakfasts. I didn't tell them I was a vegetarian ahead of time so that was definitely my fault. I felt like the portions were tiny and the food looked nice, but there was too much stuff added to it. The french toast would have been good but then there was cream cheese and orange syrup and all this other stuff in it. I also don't like sorbet for breakfast. This is a very nice place and I liked the room but I probably wouldn't stay here again because of the rules. I like more of a laid back atmosphere.

Thank you again for your stay with us last July. We were sad to hear of your concern with our house policies as being too cumbersome. For future guests reading this, we try very concertedly to not have onerous rules, but we do have a very few items incoming guests hear about and they are: how to get in the house using the electronic door lock; breakfast time; check on dietary restrictions; non-use of our kitchen; use of our guests refrigerator; non-smoking; hot tub orientation if applicable; operation of our digital satellite television and WiFi and parking. That's it. For B&Bs this is very standard and takes little time.
As highly successful B&B hosts for over 15 years we make every effort to have you enjoy your stay, but its very difficult to overcome your discomfort when we find out about it so long after your experience. With any innkeeper, always let them know right away! Happy travels!!

We were looking for a place to stay for our anniversary/birthday celebrations that we were unable to celebrate in the summer. We saw a Living Social deal with Otters Pond on Orcas Island and decided to try it. Having never been to a bed and breakfast we were unsure of what to expect but happily it turned out to be one of the best ideas we have ever had! After a stressful year this was just the place for us to unwind. Even though we went in the off season in the middle of November we had a wonderful time riding the ferry, hiking around Mountain Lake (even the fog was magical), checking out the local spots and shops and watching the birds fly in and around Otters Pond and admiring the fall color. The Swan Room overlooking the pond was wonderful place to relax and unwind. Carl and Sue were wonderful and attentive and we enjoyed talking with them. They made a us amazing 5 course breakfasts for the two days we stayed and we were so satisfied we mostly skipped lunch. They set out tea, hot cocoa, cider and snacks and assorted other goodies for us to try. They called and made dinner reservations for us at two great restaurants and gave us advise on where to go and what to see. They have a great hot tub to warm up in after being out in the crisp November days. We didn't want to leave. If you are looking for a place to unwind and relax this is the place!

Room Tip: The Swan Room has a great view of the pond and a large bathroom with a claw foot tub, but we found t...
