“Best Sushi we've had in our life!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2014

My friend and I are sushi lovers and hands down, the BEST sushi we've ever had. I LOVED the Mauna Loa. The Rainbow one was amazing as well. Seaweed salad yummy. I have been dreaming of the Mauna Loa since I had it. Can't wait to go back.

“Great Fun and Yummy Sushi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2014

We really enjoyed our dinner at Flyin' Hawaiian. Cheerful island music (think Caribbean), friendly staff, delicious food. Having taken microbiology, I tend to avoid raw fish and meat, so we focused on the variety of offerings with veggies, smoked salmon and crab. And spam.
Flyin' Hawaiian is at the north edge of the developed town. Don't miss it!

“Pretty bad restaurant, not recognizable in the other reviews”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

I am pretty reluctant to write a bad review about a restaurant with only one visit. However, we visited this restaurant because of the TripAdvisor reviews, so want to share a different point of view so others can learn from our experience.

We have been to Hawaii a number of times, and really like Japanese food so was pretty excited about a restaurant that serves Saimin and Sushi. We had an early dinner, so were the only customers during the entire time. We ordered two kinds of sashimi, California rolls, and Saimin. The sashimi was ok, but pretty poorly prepared at $8 for 3 pieces. The California rolls were slightly different from what we are used to, with fish roe on the outside, but was fine.

The shocker was the Saimin - it was not Saimin! The restaurant served white rice noodle with boiled chicken and mushroom in a paper bowl about the size of an instant noodle cup - never seen this before! Saimin is pretty common, so it was very disappointing to see it done so completely wrong. You can see what Saimin usually looks like with a quick Google search; http://goo.gl/aGktNH. We felt like we were conned.

We could barely eat the Saimin, so quickly paid and left. All in all a pretty terrible experience - can't remember the last time we were in a restaurant that was this bad. May be we were there on their bad day, but we did not have the experiences described in the many of the positive reviews.

I want to apologize that it was not more clear that the noodles were, in fact, rice noodles. As our menu states our saimin is a "gluten free" dish and while we are quite aware this is not "traditional" not much of our restaurant is (nor do we claim to be). Our amazing island has quite a need for gluten free options and we are more than happy to accommodate this, especially when it has no discernible impact on flavor or texture.

As for the sashimi, if you mean too expensive when you say "poorly prepared" I would like to point to the fact that we are on an island and have all of our fish flown in fresh, we have done extensive market research and made sure our prices are not only in-line with non-conveyor-belt style sushi restaurants, but lower. Our sashimi is always roughly 3 pieces, measured to the ounce, so depending on the saku block it's cut from can be anywhere from 3 - 5 pieces depending on the appropriate cuts that are made. You mentioned that the sushi was "fine" and the sashimi was expensive but not a huge deal, so I want to apologize that the rice noodles in the saimin was so offensive that your trip into our restaurant instantly became a pretty terrible experience.

We constantly seek out and are appreciative of any feedback and always take action where warranted to fix issues but the only thing you complained about in your review was that we use compostable 12oz soup cups and rice noodles (which is clearly noted on the menu). I apologize that your experience was not a positive one as our customer's satisfaction is our utmost priority and given the chance we would have loved to been able to address this during your visit. Had we known of this issue we would have immediately offered you your money back for the food you were not happy with or offered a substitution to replace the saimin.

“Great sushi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014 via mobile

We had a wonderful late dinner midweek when the place was empty. Inventive, fresh sushi. It is BYOB, which we wish we knew in advance. And the use way too many disposables... Think about a greener approach!

“Sublime!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

Sublime! Freshest fish, creative presentations, friendly, fast service, hospitable owner/operators, and excellent seating, in and outdoors. Orcas Island has seen Japanese restaurants come and go, but Flyin’ Hawaiian is a keeper! HIghly recommended!
